Billie "Bill" L. Burcham Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1924 - 2009

Billie BILLIE "Bill" L. BURCHAM, 85, died on Tuesday October 27, 2009 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington. Bill was a lifelong resident of Proctorville, Ohio and a proud veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. After being discharged from the U.S. Navy, Bill worked at the VA Hospital in Huntington for 32 years before retiring in 1975. He served on the Fairland Board of Education from 1963 to 1971 and on the Lawrence County Library Board from 1989 to 1996. Over the course of his life, Bill had many hobbies. He liked to cook for his family, enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and antiqueing in the Amish country of Northern Ohio. He was particularly fond of a paperweight collection accumulated over many years. Bill enjoyed helping many neighbors and friends in the Proctorville area using his handyman skills, never taking any payment for his many talents. Having grown up on a farm in rural Lawrence County, he could repair or build anything. He was born September 18, 1924 in Scottown, Ohio, son of the late Clarence "Honey" and Bessie Mannon Burcham. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers Carl Burcham, Bernard Burcham, Don Burcham and Gene Burcham; and three sisters, Weltha Dillon, Maxine Soper and Delores Lipscomb. Bill is survived by his wife of 62 years, Reba Dillon Burcham; two daughters, Pamela Thompson (Bruce) of Cary, N.C., and Paula Burcham of Proctorville; two grandchildren, Jennifer Rollins Thornton and Bryan Rollins; two great-grandchildren, Andy and Quillen Thornton. In addition, he leaves behind two brothers, Dale Burcham (Betty) of Proctorville and Duane Burcham (Betty) of Greenfield, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 31, 2009, at Hall Funeral Home by Pastor Mike Smith. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point, Ohio. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 30, 2009, at Hall Funeral Home, Proctorville, Ohio. Proctorville VFW Post # 6878 will conduct military graveside rites. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, 1101 Sixth Ave., Huntington, WV 25701.

I use to wait on Bill when I worked at Lawrence Federal. For 9 years that I was there I always enjoyed talking to him. He was a true treasure. We always looked forward to his peanut brittle made with his secret recipe and love. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Pam and Paula - Our sincere condolences to you both on the passing of your dad.  Both of your parents were so very important to my parents (how would anything ever gotten fixed at our house without your dad???).  Wishing you the comfort of countless warm memories.  Love and prayers, Lynne

Bill & Reba were wonderful friends and neighbors. Bill & my grandfather, Ernie Thorne, shared many hours of work & laughter together...was amazing they got anything done ;)! We will miss Bill's dry wit, that twinkle in his eye and infectious warm smile. Again, our hearts go out to the Burcham family. Sincerely, The Arnold & Thorne Families - Tim Arnold & Ernestine Miller-Kehl(Thorne)
