Carletta Sue Morgan Payton passed away on 24 February, 2026 at home in Mobile, Alabama after a battle with liver cancer. She was born Carletta Sue Duffer to Harold Lloyd Duffer and Delora Fay (Hayes) and had one sister Connie Fay (Sharp). She graduated from Milton High School in 1977.
She is preceded in death by both her parents, and survived by her husband Roy Todd Payton, her sister Connie Sharp and her husband Jack Sharp, her children Katelyn MaChelle Morgan and Zachary Seth Morgan and his wife Anne Theresa (Duncan), as well as her grandchildren Elizabeth Anne, Genevieve Delora, Eliana Maurita, Emaline Faustina, Rosenwyn Carletta, John Paul Ezekiel and Dafydd Bertram Llewellyn Morgan. She was also preceded in death by her poodle Gweneviere, a distinction which I fear leaving out of this obituary on pain of metaphysical consequences.
She lived and worked in the Milton and Ona area her whole life until moving to Mobile, AL in 2019 to be close to her grandchildren who called her “Nana”. She loved being a grandmother and especially loved taking the grandkids to the beach, which was her favorite place in the world.
When she moved to Mobile she worked for the University of South Alabama in the Continuing Education for Medical Professionals Office until she retired in November 2024. She met Todd through mutual friends in Mobile, and discovered that he grew up in Milton, WV and was a year ahead of her at Milton High School. They married on 11 October, 2022 at the beach and spent the next years together travelling and doting on grandchildren. Todd devoted himself to caring for Carletta when they discovered she had cancer, and she was able to pass comfortably at home with Todd dutifully by her side.
Her Memorial Service will be held at Wallace Funeral Home in Milton on 30 March, 2026 with Visitation from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. and a Service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Carletta desired donations be made to Little Victories Animal Shelter at 1168 Wire Branch Road, Ona, WV 25545; www.littlevictories.org
