Mitchell Wayne Westervelt, 52, of West Portsmouth OH, passed away Thursday July 24, 2025.
He was born May 26, 1973 in Shawnee, OK. Mitchell joined the United States Army in 1992
and served his country until 1999. He lived briefly in upstate New York where he found a
calling in Fire Service at Egypt FD. Mitchell moved to the Texas in 1999, working on custom
airplane interiors and exteriors. Mitchell’s career in Law Enforcement spanned over 2 decades,
beginning with Nocona and Muenster Police Dept ending with his service to Texas with the
Texas Department of Public Safety, Highway Patrol Division. Mitchell was also a very proud
past member of the Muenster Fire Dept. and a current member of Era Community Church.
Always adventurous with a desire to learn new things, Mitchell worked for 2 years in the west
Texas oilfield (2024-2025).
Mitchell moved with his wife to Southern Ohio in early 2025 to enjoy his retirement and to be
closer to 2 of his grandchildren. He enjoyed volunteering at the James Dickey American Legion
Post 23 where his served as the 2nd Vice Chair on the Executive Board. Mitchell spent most
evenings on his back porch where they watched “his” deer and family of raccoons. He loved his
life “in the Shawnee.”
Mitchell was preceded in death by late Kenneth Lee Westervelt, Gene and Ruby Westervelt,
Dorcie Bryce, Dennis Bryce and Jim and Eva England.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa Westervelt, and his beloved dogs (Maggie, Peach and Sage) of
the home; daughter Cara Walker and grandchildren Isabella and Jackson of Obetz, OH; son,
Derek, and wife Belen), and granddaughter Maya, of Denton TX; mother Karen Westervelt and
godfather Dean Childers of Eufaula OK; sister, Michelle Adams, and husband Thomas; sisters in
law, Jennifer (Scott) and Michelle (Mike), and children of Circleville, OH, Stephanie Jarvis of
Bethel, OK; 2nd mother in law, Nancy Garrett of Circleville, OH, and his favorite Auntie Regina,
Joe Ray, Justin and his HJ; many aunts, uncles, cousins too numerous to list from across
Oklahoma and Texas. If you knew Mitchell, you know that his friends were also his family. He
had an untold number of brothers, sisters, kids, nieces and nephews, Blue family, fire family,
American Legion family and church family.
Mitchell’s life will be celebrated on August 17, 2025 in his favorite town in Texas. Services are
at 5:30 at the Muenster VFW, Muenster, TX. Flowers/deliveries may be sent there, and
donations in his name should be made to Tunnels to Towers or Folds of Honor.
