Alex Varney

1922-2003

Alex A. Varney, 81, of Trinity Station, Flatwoods, Ky., and longtime resident of Ashland, Ky., was born July 10, 1922, in Belfry, Ky.

Mr. Varney was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Myrtle Hale Varney, and his loving wife of 51 years, Pat Varney. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Clara Mae, Madeline and Nell Varney, and brothers, Opie, Clayton and Claude Varney.

He is survived by his sister, Nina Trout of Georgetown, Ky.

Alex is the beloved father and grandfather of his daughters, Rhonda (Robert) Osburn of Ashland, Ky., Alexis Varney of Louisville, Ky., and Mary Branstetter of Reading, Pa.; his son, Bob (Angela) Varney of Ashland, Ky.; grandchildren, Julia (Robert) Smith, Jason (Jennifer) Hutchinson, Brad (Shelley) Osburn, Chris Fleming, Emily Fleming, Colin Varney and Morgan Varney; and great-grandchildren, Ryan Smith and Drew Osburn. He is also the uncle to a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Varney retired from Armco Steel in 1987 after 32 years of service. Mr. Varney was a World War II U.S. Marine Corps Pacific Theater veteran, talented basketball player who received many honors, including Best Passer in Region 15 in 1940, captain of Belfry High School basketball teams 1939 to 1941, recipient of Western Kentucky University basketball scholarship and was the first member inducted into the Belfry High School Athletic Hall of Fame on April 23, 1988.

Pastor Ed Caudill will hold funeral services Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Steen Funeral Home-Ashland Chapel, Central Avenue location.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in the Ashland Cemetery mausoleum.

Contributions may be made to the Trinity Station Retirement Center Activities Fund, 2121 Argillite Road, Flatwoods, Ky. 41139.

I did not know Mr. Varney, but my parents (Merlin & Pansy Justice) and myself knew his sisters and brothers well.

Varney Family, I am so sorry about your loss. I work at trinity station. Alex was very special to all of us. He was very kind & gentle man. I never once heard him complain. I will never forget him.
