Louis Harris Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1914 - 2004

Louis HarrisLouis Harris, the 5th of 9 children, was born to the late Jim and Anna (Abrams) Harris, on January 18, 1914, in Sumpter County, McDowell, Albama. He attended elementary school and as a hard working and thrifty young man, moved to Florida and resided in both Panama City and Pensacola, and worked at a wood veneering facility. During the 1940's, he moved to Huntington, WV, and purchased a home in which he resided. In Huntington, he worked at the Porter Steel Company and later gained employment at the Perry-Novell Company (currently Foot Locker) as a warehouseman for over 36 years. In 1955, Louis met and later married Odessa (Noble) Harris, and a daughter (Cathy) was born to them. Louis has a stepson, Kerry N. McClain, and a nephew, James Harris, whom he helped raise and treated as his own son. Louis enjoyed fishing and was proud of his "green thumb". He grew vegetables, fruits, and flowers, and shared them freely with those that lived in the neighborhood. He enjoyed his pets and was especially fond of his geese, and his cats. He was very free-hearted and helped anyone that asked him. One of his favorite past-times was sitting on his porch and conversing with his many friends and neighbors as they often stopped by. Louis was "well thought of" by his inlaws, respected and well-liked by his neighbors, and will be missed by his family, friends, and many acquaintances. Louis leaves to mourn; his wife Odessa Harris, daughter Cathy L. Dozier (Leon), stepson Kerry N. McClain, nephew James Harris (Rose), grandchildren: Aaron Philippe and Moelle LaVonne Dozier, Joseph Nathan, Andre Noble, and Vanessa Kay McClain, sister; Ora Dee Smith, brother; Fred Harris, nieces, nephewa, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 11:00AM Wednesday, December 22, in the chapel of Callender Funeral Home, with the Rev. Roy E. Terry, officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. The care and services for Mr. Harris have been entrusted to Callender Funeral Home, Huntington.
