Rev. Frederick Lee ShockleyRev. Frederick Lee Shockley, 87, of Gallipolis, was called home on Saturday, December 3, 2005, at Holzer Senior Care in Gallipolis, Ohio.

He was born November 11, 1918, at Platform, Ohio in Lawrence County, son of the late Ora Granville Shockley and Ruby Mae Burnette Shockley.

Rev. Shockley graduated from Rome High School in 1940. He attended God’s Bible School and College in Cincinnati, Ohio and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Theology. An ordained minister, he built the Guyan Tabernacle in 1946 on property given to him by his father. Rev. Shockley served the following churches during his ministry: Vinton Pilgrim, Crown City Pilgrim, Guyan Tabernacle, Crown City Wesleyan, Crown City Methodist, and Miller Methodist. He was also engaged in evangelistic work for many years. Rev. Shockley helped numerous young ministers get started in church work.

He was a World War II veteran in the United States Navy. He served from 1944-1946 and was stationed at Fort Pierce, Florida, Key West, Florida, aboard the USS Albemarie, and the Phillipines. He was awarded the American Area Victory Medal (Asiatic Pacific).

While in college, he was employed at the Plastic Moulding Corporation and the Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Throughout his life, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, and his dogs.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Ruby Ellen Lee Shockley, whom he married on July 2, 1943; two daughters, Carol (Clarence) Wamsley of Cross Lanes, West Virginia, and Dr. Denise Shockley of Gallipolis, Ohio; two granddaughters, Aimee (Jason) Winter of Scott Depot, West Virginia, and Jaimee (Randy) Miles of Cross Lanes, West Virginia. A great grandson, Nicholas Grant Winter, is to be born in March 2006.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Webster Shockley and Lester Shockley, sister Amy Barry, and in-laws Samuel Sidney Lee and Cora Ioma Self Lee.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 7, 2005, at the Crown City Wesleyan Church, with Rev. George Holley, Rev. Michael Dickerson, and Rev. Ted Holstein officiating. Burial will follow in the Miller Memorial Gardens, Miller. Friends may call at the McCoy-Moore-Wetherholt Funeral Chapel, 420 First Ave, Gallipolis from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2005 and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday, December 7, 2005.

The pallbearers will be Kenny Dillon, Rev. Larry Dillon, Danny Cornell, David Hall, Warren Holley, and Jason Black. An honorary pallbearer will be Wilbur VanMatre.

Ruby, Denise and Carol, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Fred has gone on to a place he has always talked about in his sermons. He was always there for our family and so are you. He will be missed by many people.
