1931 - 2006

Marilyn Davis GeorgasMARILYN DAVIS GEORGAS

Marilyn Davis Georgas, 75, died on Sunday, August 13, 2006 at home after a lengthy struggle with cancer. Marilyn was born January 30, 1931, in Jacksonville, Texas, daughter of Ernest J. and Etta Wright Davis, of Frankston. Ernest Davis was a Methodist preacher and the family moved frequently. Marilyn attended various schools in east and south Texas, graduating from Pearland High School, in 1947.

In 1949 she married Paul Georgas. In 1957 they moved to Silsbee. They built their home and reared their sons Carey and Rob there. They enjoyed life together there for 57 years.

Always happy when learning or teaching, Marilyn earned her B. A. degree from Sam Houston State University, her Masters degree from Lamar University, and her Ph. D. in English from the University of Texas in Austin, in 1969. For 35 years she was professor of English at Lamar University.

Marilyn loved music. She sang for many years with the Chancel Choir of First United Methodist Church of Silsbee. She also sang with the Silsbee Woman’s Chorus, a group which she organized and directed for a number of years.

Marilyn traveled a great deal, with family, with friends, and sometimes on her own. Her travels enriched her teaching and all her associations.

Her main civic work was in connection with Silsbee Public Library. She was involved in founding the Library and was its first Library Board Chairman. Recently she has been involved in planning and fund raising for the building expansion program presently underway at the library.

Marilyn is survived by her husband Paul, son Carey and his wife Linda, and son Rob, and his wife Michele all of Silsbee, grandchildren Jana Georgas of College Station, Texas, William Georgas, U.S. Navy, and his wife Amy, of Silsbee, Texas, and Phillip Georgas of Eugene Oregon, Caleb and Carleigh Kotrla and Lisa Boever of Silsbee and Wendy Watts of Bridge City, 5 great grandchildren, a sister, Leona Nini of Pasadena and a sister-in-law, Doris Davis of Tyler, a number of nephews and nieces and a host of loving friends. She will be greatly missed.

Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church of Silsbee, 670 North Fifth Street, Silsbee, Texas 77656 or to Library Building Fund, Silsbee Public Library, Santa Fe Park, Silsbee, Texas 77656 or to the charity of your choice.

Funeral services will be 10 A.M., Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at First United Methodist Church in Silsbee with interment following in R. S. Farmer Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Farmer Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M., Monday at the Funeral Home.

Paul and Family, It was such a comfort when I use to see the twinkle in Marilyn's eyes as we would meet in the hallways of Lamar while I was attending college. Each time, she would greet me with a smile and a how are ya. But, that was the true Marilyn, a twinkle, a smile, and a how are ya. I know she is greeting others above the same way. Peggy

Marilyn Davis Georgas was a talented Christian lady from the distinguished Methodist Davis family which can be traced from Wales to colonial America. She was helpful to me in gathering information for a future Davis family history. I regret that I never met her in person but look forward to seeing her in Heaven some day. Our sincere sympathy to her family and friends, in whose hearts she will long live.

I am so sorry to read this. I taught English at Lamar from 1987-1990 and worked with Marilyn. During my three years there, I chatted frequently with her and really enjoyed discussing our favorite places in London. I truly enjoyed our friendship while I was living in Beaumont. Please accept my condolences. Sincerely, Susan Palmer
