Frances Elizabeth CobbleFrances Elizabeth Upshaw Cobble

Frances Elizabeth Upshaw Cobble, a long time resident of Silsbee, Texas, died on August 12, 2007 at the age of 90 after a long and wonderful life. Born on April 10, 1917, in Somerville, Texas Frances moved to Silsbee at the age of five. On January 21, 1940, she married the love of her life, Cecil Cobble, who preceded her in death in 1989. She shared with Cecil her love for our country and was always proud that he served in the Army during World War II. Frances and Cecil delighted in the lives of their three children. Over the course of the years, they welcomed together five grandchildren and following Cecil’s death, Frances celebrated the births of eight great-grandchildren, all of whom were her pride and joy.

Her life was defined by faith in her Savior Jesus Christ. She was a devoted Christian and a member of First United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She cherished her friends in the the Victery Sunday School Class and was involved in every facet of the church. In her early years, she taught Sunday School and worked tirelessly in Vacation Bible School. A member of United Methodist Women, Frances chronicled the history of the church and that history has become an important part of the church. She was a scout leader in Camp Fire Girls for many years and was in charge of the distribution and sale of Girl Scout Cookies.

Proud of her community, Frances served on the Library Board for many years. She was recognized by the Silsbee Woman’s Club for the Good Neighbor Award and served as a HOST volunteer in the school community. She was also instrumental in helping to establish the Association of Retarded Citizens and served as treasurer on that Board for several years.

Frances, a kind, sweet and generous person, was the epitome of volunteering for she spent her life giving to others to improve lives and the community. She continued volunteering well into her 80s at the Christian Care Center.

In addition to Cecil, Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Harney and Annie Russell Upshaw, her siblings, Melba Upshaw Twitty and Raleigh White Upshaw, and her dear great grandson, Matthew Ryan Cobble. She is survived by her children and their spouses, David and Karen Cobble of Silsbee, Cecile and Jerry Fritz of Grapevine, and Carole and Jim Willis of Houston. Also surviving her are her grandchildren and their spouses, Greg and Amy Cobble of Fort Worth, Leslie and Craig Pember of Beaumont, Carrie and Jason Krall of New Orleans, James and Hope Willis of New York, and Julie and Darin Preston of Houston. She is survived by her beloved great-grandchildren, Gretchen and Meredith Cobble, Lauren Pember, Katie, Evan and Andrew Krall, and Elliott Preston. Her sister-in-law, Marie Upshaw, survives her in Bush, Louisiana. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee on Tuesday, August 14, 5 – 8 p.m. Funeral will be at First United Methodist Church in Silsbee on Wednesday, August 15, 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in Silsbee. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Silsbee (McDonough Hall Project).

My mother's family lived next door to the Cobbles for many years in Silsbee. Later - when Mom wanted to sponsor a Blue Bird group it was Mrs. Cobble who guided her, encouraged her and was there if and when she needed any assistance. Later the Blue Bird troup became Camp Fire Girls. We participated in many fun after school activities. We toured the rail road in Silsbee, appeared on Channel 4's Cowboy John show. We learned how to survive in the piney woods - while sun bathing on Village Creek. We learned to love knowledge and to explore the world outside our community. Mrs. Cobble can well and truly pat herself on the back for her stellar contributions. While sorting through my Mom's letters I found several from Mrs. Cobble -another communication about the Camp Fire Girls. Her comments were encouraging, ensightful and filled with down home wisdom. As a former Camp Fire Girl and Blue Bird I wish to say thanks and may your tribe increase!

Mrs. Cobble was one of the sweetest people I've ever known. She was always smiling and truly cared about people. She loved her family and was so proud of all them, especially those great grandchildren. Talking about them made her glow!! She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Our prayers are with the family. Our parents were such good friends and now they are together again. Mrs. Cobble was one of those "villagers" who kept Pat in line when he need that. Silsbee has lost a treasure. She will be remembered as a Christian example of how to live.
