Brenda Smith Ervin Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1943 - 2007

On October 31, 1943 in the city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania the chimes of time rang out the news that Brenda Lee Smith was born to the late Randolph and Lillian Scott Smith. At a very young age Brenda moved with her family to Huntington, West Virginia were she attended Barnett Elementary and graduated from Huntington High School in the class of 1966. Following high school she enrolled in Marshall University and received an Associates Degree in social work in 1968.

She was employed by several different companies and retired as a welder from Armco Steel. Brenda loved her grandchildren and attended many of their sporting functions. She was an avid bowler and fisher and loved to yell “Bingo” from time to time.

On Thursday, September 27 from a room at St. Mary’s Hospital the chimes that began 63 years ago rang out the news that Brenda had been called to join her parents Randolph and Lillian Smith, son Henry Edward Ervin and other friends and loved ones who had preceded her in death.

She leaves to cherish her memories: Lifelong companion, Charles Toles of Huntington, West Virginia, six children; Debbie (Leon) Gibson-White, Stacy (George) Thurmond and Ronnie Smith of Huntington, West Virginia, Jon (Syretta) Smith and Michelle (Ken) Logwood of Columbus, Ohio, Randy (Regina) Smith of Richmond, Virginia. Step-daughter, Nikki Toles, Utica, NY. Step-son, Eric Robinson, Middleport, OH. Step-father, Henry Taylor. Fourteen grandchildren; Charlie Pankey, of South Carolina, Ericka, RJ and Jasmine Smith of Richmond, Virginia, Kenny, Kristopher and Kristina Logwood of Columbus, Ohio, Rodney Gibson of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Brandon and Travis, Atkins, Seneca Smith, John Thurmond, Deric and Dominique Gibson all of Huntington, West Virginia. Five great-grandchildren; Keymaura, Breia, Stevie, Sarah and Tayshawn. Step-granddaughter, Aaliyah Weathers, Utica, NY and a host of other relatives and many, many friends that are too numerous to count. Services will be 11:00AM Monday, October 1, 2007 at Young Chapel AME Church, with the Reverend Angela Walker, officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00-7:00PM Sunday, September 30, 2007 at Young Chapel AME Church.

With deepest sympathy..... Debbie,Jon,Randy,Stacy,Michelle & Ronnie, words can not tell you how my heart is heavy and full of sadness. Brenda will be truly missed because she was indeed "one of a kind" Please believe that the memories of the days she graced this earth will live on forever and you will be able to laugh and smile when you think about her. I am so sorry that I could not be there to join in the homegoing celebration for your mother, but I will think of her often and smile knowing that she is resting in the arms of the angels. I pray and wish that each of you find the strength to face each new day and be blessed with God's grace and mercy. Love one another and stay strong. My thoughts, love and friendship are forever with you now and always. Let the words of the Lord always sustain you and keep you in the faith. --For thou hast delivered my soul from death; wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?-- PSALMS 56:13

Brenda was a good person who loved life to the fullest and enjoyed her family and friends as well. I will always remember the beautiful smiles and hugs when greeting her. I have stories to tell about Ms. Lillian (who my grandfather Jackson Jones lived with) and the storie about Brenda and the welfare office. My continued prayers goes out to the family, close friends that somewhere the silver lining that we all shall meet again and share beautiful memories. Sadly submitted by Major C.
