1936 - 2008

Bobby Gean AgnewBorn April 28, 1936 in Paxton, Texas and grew up in Orange, Texas, a resident of Lumberton, Texas since 1963.

Died July 26, 2008 after an extended illness.

During his 45 years of living in Lumberton, Bob was actively involved in the Lumberton Lions Club, Lumberton School Board serving 23 years, Lumberton Little League and Lumberton Athletics Booster Club. He was instrumental in building Lumbertons Senior Citizen Center, planning and organization of the city of Lumberton, and the planning and organization of the Lumberton Mud District. While serving on the Lumberton School Board he was a significant contributor to the building of Lumberton Primary School, Lumberton Intermediate School, and portions of Lumberton High School. During his membership at Infant Jesus Catholic Church he was one of the founders of the original church building. He served many years on the Beaumont Home Builders Association.

During his service to the Lumberton community he was honored with many awards such as citizen of the year, lion of the year multiple times, and an excellence in education award.

Bob is well known in his community for his can do: get it done attitude. He has many friends and a heart for giving to people he knew were in need. He supported his friends and always made new friends by giving many hours of community service to such endeavors as: rebuilding homes, sand bagging during floods, re-roofing homes and organized various fundraisers.

Bob was a carpenter and home builder until 1974 when he became the owner of Quality Sales in Beaumont, Texas where he worked until his retirement in 1999. Bob enjoyed many years of hunting, fishing, camping, golfing, and traveling, but the greatest joy of his life was his thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Gene and Sarah Jane Agnew and his wife Mary Ellen Agnew.

He is survived by his sister Irene Garrett of Houston, Texas, his five children David Agnew, Sara Ayres, and Mary Margaret Johnson all of Lumberton, Texas, Nancy Booker of Kirbyville, Texas, and Doug Agnew of Mountain City, Texas his son-in-laws, daughter-in-laws, many nieces and nephews, as well as his thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Megan and Mike Mosier, Derek and Nicole Grant, Leslie, Tess, and Marissa McKeehan, Matthew and Cade Johnson, Jacob, Amber, Heath, Jamie, Will, and Justin Agnew.

The family would like to thank Dr. Arfeen who gave special care to our Dad, Grand Dad, and Great Granddad for over ten years, as well as his physicians assistant Chris, and his nurse Sherry. We would also like to thank the staff of Promise Hospital, but especially Dads nurse Victor Manicera for his loving care to our Dad in his final hours.

Funeral services will be10:00 am Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Woodcrest United Methodist Church in Lumberton under the direction of Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee. Visitation will be 5:00 to 9:00 pm Monday at the funeral home.

There is not enough room on an obituary to describe all the good that this man brought to this earth. He leaves behind a legacy of children and grand children that carry on his good works. I always admired the manner in which he and Mrs. Agnew raised such a fine family. He did so while juggling all the hardships of building and running his own business; and serving on every board in the community. To top that off, he never missed an event involving his children. His encouraging voice and presence were always present. God Bless you Bob.

Mary Margaret and family, I'm sorry for the loss of your father. Travis and I will keep you in our prayers in the days to come. I understand what you are going through, I lost my dad this past June. If there is anything I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask, even if it's just an ear to listen. The pain will lessen, but you will never forget your father, he will always be close to you in your heart. He's sitting at the foot of the throne singing Holy, Holy, Holy with a smile on his face...there is no other God like Him!
