I Regret I was unable to attend. Janet will always be remembered for her service (true leadership) to the MU Black Alumni and all of Marshall as well. She provided energy and will be irreplaceable. Let us be inspired by her example. She joins our brother Nate as another MU Champion. Let us continue to fulfill the legacy of these dear friends on behalf of all sons and daughters of Marshall, First Baptist Church and the Huntington community.

To the family of the late Janis Winkfield, I do not believe words can adequately convey our sympathy to the family. Deron and I are so sorry we could not attend the homegoing service. I know it was a hallelujah time. Janis was a wonderful and dear person. She was a great professional and a lot of fun. I will always treasure the time shared on the cruise in February with the MUBAA. Janis made sure everyone was okay. My dear Soror Vickie and friend Drema, I know your hearts are aching, all of you guys have been so close. You and your family continue to look to the Lord where your strength flows, he will be with you today, tomorrow and always. Your friends and fellow alums, Sandi & Deron Terrell (the camera man)

My deepest and heartfelt condolences to the Winkfield family in your time of mourning. Janis' quick smile and hugs were truly a blessing from Heaven each time I visited the Marshall financial aid office on business travel or had the pleasure of seeing her at the many WV financial aid association conferences over the years. I am so saddenned by her loss, but the wonderful memories of her contagious smile and laughter will not soon fade. God bless you and keep you strong.

To the family of Janis Winkfield, My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. I am still in shock regarding Janis' sudden passing. I was just sitting at a picnic table with her, laughing and talking, the Sunday before. I've known Janis since my college years (1989) and she was currently assisting me in getting my oldest son ready for his first year of college. When I returned to Marshall to attended nursing school (1998) I received the Joseph Slash Scholarship award. I later found out that Janis nominated me for this! She always encouraged me to return to school. What an asset she was to Marshall University and this community as a whole. She will never be forgotten. She left her imprint on the heart of so many youth. Her labor was not in vain! May God bless and keep you all during this most difficult time. I am thankful for the opportunity to know Janis.

When Tomorrow Starts Without Me When tomorrow starts without me, And I'm not there to see; If the sun should rise and find your eyes All filled with tears for me; I wish so much you wouldn't cry The way you did today, While thinking of the many things, We didn't get to say. I know how much you love me, As much as I love you, And each time that you think of me, I know you'll miss me too; But when tomorrow starts without me, Please try to understand, That an angel came and called my name, And took me by the hand, And said my place was ready, In heaven far above, And that I'd have to leave behind All those I dearly love. But as I turned to walk away, A tear fell from my eye, For all my life, I'd always thought, I didn't want to die. I had so much to live for, So much yet to do, It seemed almost impossible, That I was leaving you. I thought of all the yesterdays, The good ones and the bad, I thought of all the love we shared, And all the fun we had. If I could relive yesterday, Just even for awhile, I'd say good-bye and kiss you And maybe see you smile. But then I fully realized, That this could never be, For emptiness and memories, Would take the place of me. And when I thought of worldly things, I might miss come tomorrow, I thought of you, and when I did, My heart was filled with sorrow. But when I walked through heaven's gates, I felt so much at home. When God looked down and smiled at me, From His great golden throne, He said "This is eternity, And all I've promised you." Today for life on earth is past, But here it starts anew. I promise no tomorrow, But today will always last, And since each day's the same way There's no longing for the past. But you have been so faithful, So trusting and so true. Though there were times you did some things, You knew you shouldn't do. But you have been forgiven And now at last you're free. So won't you take my hand And share my life with me? So when tomorrow starts without me, Don't think we're far apart, For every time you think of me, I'm right here, in your heart.

Like everone else, I was shocked and saddened by Janis' sudden passing. She was a good person, very committed to helping others. That is why she started an endowment in Nate Ruffin's name. I was happy to make a contribution in memory of Janis on Friday. She had a lot of vitality and Janis will live on in our memories indefinitely.

Janis Faye Winkfield was and always will be a BEAUTIFUL lady, both inside and out! She had the gift of making one feel special, even if she'd just met them. Although we rarely got to see each other, when we did, it was as if time had not passed. Janis was always the same sweet, precious lady. Our loss is Heaven's gain. My thoughts and prayers are with you, her loving family.

Ms. Janis was like a second mother to me. During my two years working with her she was like my guardian angel...(her office was full of little angels). When my parents left me alone in Huntington two years ago my mom asked her to watch over me and Janis did just that. She looked out for me at work, and if I needed anything she was always there to lend a helping hand, when I was out of line she put me in my place and I respected her for that. Janis was a beautiful person. She did her job well, she helped a lot people, and she touched a lot of lives and mines was definately one of them. I will never forget Janis and though my heart is heavy I know she is in a better place still watching over everyone she cared about and for Janis that is definately an endless list of people. May God bless her family and I will keep you in my prayers.

Coming to the funeral made it harder on me, but I loved & miss Sweetie. I still can't believe she is gone. I now live in front of your old house where all 10 were raised. All I have to say to the family and those who use to live in Leslie:"There is no place like home in Less-lie." Humble, meek, being content where you are in the Lord until HE promotes you. Why seek the material things of this world and lose your soul? I love you all.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Winkfield family in the loss of Janis. We met Janis at Marshall University's Outstanding Black Student Weekend. And when our son, Samuel, became a student at Marshall, Janis was his financial aid counselor. We were impressed because she was so concerned and thoughtful. Marshall University has suffered a great loss in someone who truly cared about the students. We will always remember Janis' kind assistance and words of wisdom. May her family continue to "Hold To God's Unchanging Hand".

Janis Winkfield what can I say. The memories that I have we are always laughing and joking. Anyone you talk to about Janis will alway say how she made them laugh. Janis and Lisa along with Linda Stapleton were my guardian angels for my four years as the ticket manager at Marshall University. All the long hours and late nights that we all worked together, it was Janis's jokes and laughs that made the days enjoyable. I look back on those years and it was the most valuable experience of my life when people work together and enjoy each other's company. It was truly a great experience. Janis will not be forgotten. Every time I feel overwhelmed or stressed out, I always think about Janis and Lisa making jokes or acting silly. Janis I have one more thing to say to you "WHATEVER"! I LOVE YOU GIRL. Save me a seat in the sky box.

I came to work at the financial aid office at Marshall when I was 22 years old and Janis was 34. We didn't hit it off good at first because she saw me as a winy extremely emotional little brat! I thought she didn't like me. But what I didn't know, was that she did like me a whole lot and was trying to make me strong and help me grow up, and through the 13 years we worked together, I did grow up and I did grow strong and I owe it all to her. I love her very much and will miss her dearly. She helped me, just like she helped all her other students at Marshall. She gave people hope, chances, and most of all she changed bad lives to good lives. There will never be another Janis. She'll be in my heart forever. I love you Janis

Janis made an everlasting memory on my heart. I met Janis when I did a party for her and her friends several years ago and then again at the Financial Aid office at Marshall. We knew we had met before but couldn't figure out where until we thought alittle harder and realized that I had hosted a party for her and I had also bought jewelry from her at Friedman's. Those are the only three times we met but her smile and warmth will forever carry on in my heart. She was so happy and full of life. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends and may you have peace in your heart by knowing all the people that Janis touched in a loving and kind way while here on earth.

It was a complete surprise, especially when I saw her as her normal happy person at 11:30 a.m. on 5/19/2009 as I was heading out of Old Main to meet an appointment. Upon my return, I learned of the situation. Im always asking if you are still working at the mall or how you were doing. Through Janis, I learned there is no Lazarus, but Macys, and youre still there. That tells you how often Im in that direction. Again, Im sorry about the lost of your sister. With Empathy, Virginia M. Campbell-Turner

I would like to send my condolences to Ms. Janis' family, and say that, "weaping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." I would like to say that Ms. Janis' was a wonderful person, and without her playing her part as one of the many links that helped me during my undergraduate college years, there is no way I would have graduated from college. I was a part of Janis' Boys as she called us, Ronald, Sean, Jimme, and I. Cuz she never had any problems out of us on campus, on trips with the Center for African-Amercian Students, or any other time. She wanted us all to finish school, and Ronald was the last one out of us to graduate, and he just did, spring 09'. Look Janis' WE ALL MADE IT. LOVE YOU, AND LOOK DOWN ON US.

I will never forget Janis' kindness when our son Nick and I went to Marshall to register him for the his first semester. She was such a helpful, pleasant person. Beautiful on the inside and on the outside. You could tell she cared deeply about the students she helped - it wasnt just a job for her - it was a mission. She will be deeply missed.

I was so saddened to hear of the death of Janis. But at the same time happy to know that she is with the Lord! I worked with her for several years at MU. She always liked my office because I kept a heater going summer and winter to keep warm. She could come there and get warmed up!! My thoughts and prayers are with her family and her beloved co-workers at MU, especially the Financial Aid office staff!

I've had the pleasure of working with Janis for almost four years now, planning meals for skyboxes, Links luncheons and other events she was a part of. She also played a very important role in helping both of my children go through the enrollment process at Marshall, I don't know what I would've done without her help. She was one of my favorite people to work with, she told it to you like it was, kept it real, and didn't beat around the bush at all. She let you know when something wasn't right, but she also let you know when she was pleased in her own special way. I miss her so much already, and I know I am just one of many. My sincerest heartfelt sympathy goes out to her family, friends, co-workers, and the many students she has helped in making it possible for them to get an education and a start in life. I don't think she realized how many people's lives she touched, but we all know. There will never be another Janis, how blessed we all are to have known her, and what a loss to those who didn't. You rest now Janis, we'll take over from here. With much love, Renea Slayton.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Janis's entire family. Also to all of her co-workers in Financial Aid. Janis was a very close friend of my family and we all will miss her in ways I can not express. She brought years of joy to my mother who worked with Janis at Morrow Library and has remained friends for all these years. We all have her in our thoughts. I want to say how very sorry I am for your loss. Janis was a wonderful person and I really enjoyed working with her, even though it was only during football season. Both of us were in charge of sky suites at Marshall and we were always taking care of each other when we ran out of things or whatever. She was always so nice, cheerful and just a beautiful person. She will truly be missed by us all. Please accept my sincere heartfelt condolences.

Words cannot express the shock I had when I heard that Janis had passed away. I met Janis when I started Marshall and she was always very active there. She talked to me about Sigma Gamma Rho when I was a freshman and helped me with my financial aid in graduate school. She was always there, willing to help. Homecoming will not seem the same without seeing her smile at the Black Alumni events. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family. Janis was very special and she touched a lot of lives, making them better. Heather Brown Conwell Marshall Black Alumni

I am so sorry I will not be able to be there to celebrate Janis' homegoing. Janis was truly a woman who cared about people and was committed to giving everyone an opportunity to reach their fullest potential - whether it was a student or a newcomer to the University or the community. Her commitment to MU Black Alumni, Inc., the MU Financial Aid Office and every organization she belonged to was resounding and she will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to her family and friends. Sandra Clements
