1913 - 2010
Mr. Dalyn Tappan Ling, 96, died Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at his daughter's home near Greenville. He was born May 22, 1913 in Wisconsin, the son of Martin and Coral Ling. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School, and was a former Battle Creek, Hastings, and Croton resident. Following many odd jobs during the depression era, Mr. Ling settled on a career in the trucking industry which lasted over 30 years. During that time, he maintained an excellent safety record. Mr. Ling was blessed with a healthy and full life. He was an extremely good-natured & friendly person and could converse with just about anyone. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved living by the water. He water skied while still in his 70's and rode in hot air balloons and gliders during his 80's. He traveled extensively in his retirement years visiting nearly all 50 states including Hawaii and Alaska several times. He was a self taught carpenter and actually tore down a cottage near Battle Creek and transported it by sections to the Manistee River to be reassembled as a vacation home. He loved to listen to his daughter sing and watch his grandsons play sports. He was an active golfer himself for over 40 years. In his later years, he would often kick up his heels on the dance floor with "his lady" Arlene, as well as try their luck at the casinos. He found joy in reading thousands of books and playing cards with his family. Mr. Ling was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 50 years, Nancy (Williams), in 1994; his son, David E. Ling, in 1971; his brothers, Alberton, Everett, and Lloyd Ling; and his sister, Gladys Hanke. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Julie A. and Donald J. Momber of Greenville; his grandchildren, Geoffrey and Heather Momber of Grand Rapids and Shayne Momber of Larkspur, CO; his great-grandchildren, Christian and Raegan Momber; his special lady, Arlene Wallis of Cedar Springs; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Friday at 3:00 PM at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville, with Rev. Jerrold T. Jones of the First Congregational Church of Greenville officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. In accordance with Mr. Ling's wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions in Mr. Ling's honor may be given to the David E. Ling Memorial Loan Fund at Western Michigan University or to the Flat River Community Library.
