Released from ALS's mortal chains that had silenced her beautiful contralto voice for more than a year, Elinor Doepping Norris walked triumphantly through Heaven's gates on March 11, 2010, singing joyously as she found the seat awaiting her in the Redeemer's choir. Elinor was born in Proctorville, Ohio on May 6, 1926 to the late William Oliver Doepping and the late Jessie Dillon Doepping Walden. Her father later moved to Canada and remarried. Mrs. Norris is survived by her half-sister, Audrey Doepping Fletcher and her half-brother John Doepping both of Ridgeway, Ontario, Canada. She was preceded in death by her half-sister the late Donna Doepping Hawkins. On September 5, 1948, she married the late Don B. Norris of Proctorville, Ohio, in the First Presbyterian Church of Gallipolis, Ohio. Mr. Norris preceded her in death on October 17, 1997. Mrs. Norris was the mother of the late Julia Ann Norris (JAN) who preceded her in death on March 24, 2008. She is survived by her other children Marietta Lynn (John) Moore of Franklin; Patrick Donovan Norris of Franklin; John Byron (Jill) Norris of Franklin; five grandchildren; four step grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. She boasted proudly that being a wife, mother and grandmother were "the best jobs of all." Mrs. Norris graduated from Gallia Academy High School of Gallipolis, Ohio in 1944 and Holzer School of Nursing of Gallipolis, Ohio in 1948. Mr. and Mrs. Norris resided in Columbus, Indiana during the Korean War when Mr. Norris was stationed at Camp Atterbury. They settled their family in Franklin, Indiana in 1963 where they made numerous friends, acquaintances and Elinor made lasting affinitive bonds. Mrs. Norris attended Indiana University. She served as a mentor for the I.U. School of Nursing for students in Nursing Administration. She was certified in Geriatric Nursing by the American Nurses Association (ANA). She was a member of the ANA, Indiana State Nurses Association, Indiana Hospitals Association and the Nursing Administration Association. As a registered nurse, Mrs. Norris was a strong patient-care advocate. For twenty-two years, she was employed as a supervisor, and later as nursing administrator at Johnson Memorial Hospital. She then worked for ten years at the Indiana Masonic Hospital, where she retired from the practice of Nursing. As aforementioned, Mrs. Norris had a beautiful contralto voice, which she shared with friends, family and many audiences, beginning at a very young age. As a teenager, she won several singing honors in Gallipolis, Ohio. She also sang in the choirs of the First Presbyterian Churches in both Gallipolis, Ohio and Franklin, Indiana. She was a member of Franklin's First Presbyterian Church chancel choir from 1963 to 2008. In addition, Mrs. Norris was an original member of "The Voices", a member of Matinee Musicale since 1964 and a member of the "Nan-Dor-El" trio in the mid-1970's. The Rev. Peter F. Jessen will conduct a celebration of life service at 6:30 pm on Monday, March 15, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church, 100 E. Madison Street, Franklin, Indiana. Members of the public, hospitals, choirs and singing groups are warmly invited to join with her family in honoring Mrs. Norris' memory and to share their memories. Friends and family may call from noon to 2 pm on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at Hall Funeral Home 625 County Road 775 in Proctorville, Ohio with funeral services to follow immediately thereafter. Mrs. Norris will be interred in the Proctorville-Rome Cemetery beside her husband, mother and first child. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Franklin, Indiana chancel choir or the Indiana Chapter of the American ALS Association.
