Jimmie D. Mayo Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1935 - 2010

Jimmie D. MayoJimmie Dale Mayo (Coach Mayo) won his last game and victoriously went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 19, 2010. Husband of Lizabethe (Libby) Stephens Mayo, he was born February 4, 1935, in Wayne County, WV to Everett Tylor (ET) and Olive Lucille Flora Mayo. He was a 1953 graduate of Vinson High School where he played and lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He was a member of the 1950, and the 1951 Class A State High School Championship football teams. During his mid-twenties, Jim coached junior high football for four years at Vinson and was a graduate assistant coach at Marshall from 1963 to 1964.

After earning a bachelors degree in education from Marshall University in 1965, he began coaching and teaching at Fairland High School in Proctorville, Ohio, and remained there until 1978. While at Fairland, he started wrestling, track, and golf teams. He also began a weight lifting program, created the Varsity F Club for athletes, and a chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. As Fairlands head football coach he won five OVC championships: 1967 (the 1st in the history of the school), 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975. He was also the Assistant Coach at the Ohio North-South All Star Game in 1975. The present football stadium, field, and track were constructed while he was at Fairland. The Fairland Football Stadium was renamed the Jim Mayo Stadium on October 9, 2009. Jim was also honored with a KEY to Lawrence County by the County Commissioners who officially declared, October 9th Jim Mayo Day for all time.

Jim wore many hats during his tenure at Fairland: football, track, wrestling, and golf coach, as well as, teacher and assistant principal. However, his real love was coaching football and sharing his passion for Christ with his players. He led by example, stressing integrity, honesty, and his love for the Lord and family both on and off the field.

Jim began working as an ironworker at the age of 16. From 1978 to 1983, Jim returned to the Ironworkers Union Local 769 and completed his 30th year as an ironworker.

In the summer of 1983, Jim re-entered the profession he loved dearly-coaching football. He was hired at South Point High School, where he would once again touch the lives of many young men and women. Coach Mayo retired from education in 1999 after 30 years, but he never retired from serving the Lord.

Throughout his courageous battle with cancer he never ceased witnessing for his beloved Jesus nor ceased touching lives. Jim impacted everyone he met with his gift of gab, love of people, infectious personality, and devotion to his Lord and Savior. He cherished the numerous friendships he maintained with previous coaches, players, co-workers and students with whom he shared much love and respect. Coach Mayo will be deeply missed by all those who had the honor and privilege of knowing him throughout his lifetime.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Lizabethe Anne Stephens Mayo, one son, Brent Mayo (Julie), one daughter, Jaime Keeney (Tom), and one grandson, Brandon Keeney (April), three granddaughters: Britani Short (Mike), Sarah Kathleen Mayo, and Anna Kathryn Mayo. He is survived also by his brother, Danny Joe Mayo (Sheila), sisters: Kay Ann Mayo, Dottie Looney (John Looney, deceased), Jackie Ritter, one sister-in-law Evelyn Lloyd (Bert) and a very special, faithful and loyal friend, Jack Dawson, and devoted co-worker and friend Travis Hager. Additional survivors include several nieces and nephews and their families.

Jim was a member of the Westmoreland Church of Christ for most of his life. He currently attended and was a member of the Guyandotte Church of Christ in Huntington, WV, where he has many loving and dear friends.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at http://www.timeformemory.com/hall.

Friends may call from 6 pm to 9 pm Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Fairland Middle School. Funeral service will be held 2 pm on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Hall Funeral Home, Proctorville, Ohio with ministers Willie Purdee of the Guyandotte Church of Christ, Harry Gill of Chester, VA, and Robert Warren of Versailles, KY, presiding. Entombment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington, WV. Pallbearers will be Glen Stapleton, Wayne Hager, Allen Hager, Jerry Love, Rick Love, Terry Wall, Randy Shavor, and Todd Deere. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Hatfield, Bob Lester, John Sherman, Andy Nemeth, Jack Evans, Keith Maddox, Kenny Shafer, Billie Jo Watts, Marshall Reynolds, and all former coaches and players. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Coach Jim Mayo Memorial Scholarship Fund at any U.S. Bank.

Dear Mayo family, I grieve with and for you. Coach Mayo was one of the main reasons why the seventies was the best decade for me at Fairland. I had so much respect for him, and I will never forget the many pleasant memories surrounding our relationship. I am blessed to have been a part of his life, as well as the rest of your family. God bless you.

Libby, I did not know about Jimmy until I checked Hall's web page in reference to John Simpson. I am so sorry, Jimmy was a good man. I remember the first day I was at Westmoreland he took me all around town introducing me to the area and then we called together several times. God bless and comfort you in your loss. Sonny Furrow

Love and blessings from Clermont, Florida. It's hard to believe that Jimmie's gone from us. He had a wonderful life, a wonderful spouse, children and grandchildren he adored. He served the Lord and His church with all his heart. Energetic, sincere, driven, full of fun, loving, caring...are just a few of the adjectives that describe him. What a guy!

Coach Mayo was a true legendary person as a coach and an educator. I grew up on Auburn Road and as a 6 year old began playing the game of basketball on the smooth dirt court that was at coach Mayo's house. I have wonderful memories of those times. Coach Mayo's passion towards people in seeing their worth and his ability to connect with and bring out the best in so many people will be a part of his legacy that I will never forget. Peace be with the Mayo family and all the hearts of those that were touched by this great man. David Hetzer

Brent, When I saw the announcement of your Dad's Home-going, all the memories of our times together on the football field and basketball court in 7th and 8th grade seemed like yesterday. I'm sorry I never got to play ball for your Dad, but I do remember what an awesome man and role model he was for so many. I know you and your family will miss him, but I also know your faith will bring you peace, daily, as we all get closer every day to a great reunion with the Lord and our loved ones who've gone before us.

We are so sorry for your loss of Jim, but we rejoice with you in knowing that he is at home with the Lord and resting in peace. I had the privilege of running into Jim at the Dairy Queen in Chesapeake, in late summer of last year. He was in such good spirits and was putting up the good fight even then. He wasn't dwelling on his illness, but was remembering our families when we were neighbors on Auburn Road. I pray that God will give you comfort and that you will recall all the blessings He bestowed upon your wonderful family. Sincerely, with love, Loretta Hetzer and family
