1959 - 2011

Bruce GulleyBruce Alan Gulley was born June 12, 1959 in Groves City, Pennsylvania to Hunter & Phyllis Gulley. Bruce passed away March 15, 2011. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, March 17, 2011. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 A.M. on Friday March, 18 2011 at Forest Oaks Chapel and interment will follow at West Oaks Cemetery. He grew up most of his young life here in Jasper attending Jasper School. He loved sports and played just about everything Jasper ISD had to offer. In high school he learned the trade of welding from Horace Hobbs, then took his trade into construction as a pipe welder. Due to illness, Mr. Hobbs requested Bruce be the next JISD welding instructor. He loved teaching students the trade of welding, and their winning record spoke for itself around the nation. Every year Bruce took a team to state and national competition. Bruce sat as board chairman for Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. He received many awards during this time. He was teacher of the year at JHS and named teacher of the year for the entire state of Texas. Bruce also had the love of golf, and served as the Head golf coach for JHS. His teams had many winning seasons. He was a very devoted teacher, and dedicated many hours after school helping his students excel. Bruce retired from Jasper ISD in 2001. Bruce married Becky Kirkland in 1979 and they became the proud parents of Carissa Cae Gulley on February 1, 1982. Carissa was the apple of her dad's eye and had him wrapped around her finger. They shared many happy times together hunting, golfing, going down the river and riding 4-wheelers. After leaving Jasper & moving to Zavalla he met & married Cindy Cockrum in 2005. Bruce and Cindy were raising her grandchildren, Matthew and Emily Clark. On July 13, 2009, Bruce became the proud grandfather of Cooper Wayne Lewis. He was a loving, caring, and giving man. Bruce left this earth March 15, 2011 in a tragic car accident. He will be greatly missed by all. Survived by his parents W.H. & Phyllis Gulley of Zavalla. Daughter Carissa Gulley Lewis & husband Bobby Wayne Lewis Jr. of Jasper. Wife Cindy Cockrum Gulley and her 2 grandchildren Matthew & Emily Clark. 1 sister Belinda Herring & husband Roger. 1 nephew Rhett Hunter & 1 niece Rachel Hope Herring all of Sour Lake, and 1 very special grandson Cooper Wayne Lewis of Jasper. To the Gulley Family, I first send my sincere apologies for not being able to attend the funeral. My name is Greggory Jenkins. Mr. Gulley was a friend, teacher, mentor, and advisor of mine. He inspired me in welding and leadership as we traveled across America. He taught me and showed me that there was more the world had to offer. My experience as the Texas State VICA President and Mr. Gulley as my friend, more than advisor, has always been a close memory of mine. I thank you all for him and I pray for your peace forever. Love always, Greggory Jenkins, Jasper, Texas now GySgt Greggory Jenkins United States Marines, Okinawa Japan

Even though I have not seen Bruce in over 10 years, he will always have a wonderful place in my memory as a fellow teacher at JHS. He had many great teaching moments together.

All of Bruce's family, Bruce was a very good friend of mine. I always enjoyed being around him and admired how he supported his students while at Jasper High School. We became friends through my visits to Jasper HS and VICA. While at TSTC - Waco he sent me some of the best welding students we ever had at TSTC-Waco. I'm retired now, and wasn't aware of the accident until my ex-secretary Veronica e-mailed me today. Again, I'm so sorry to hear about this. He was a very good and dear friend and teacher. Thanks Department Chair - Welding Technology, retired TSTC Waco

I want to thank everyone for your kind words of comfort and heartfelt admiration for Bruce, He was truely kind, loving, humble, giving, classy, extremely funny and a true example of a Southern Gentleman. He was a wonderful husband and my friend, I love and will miss him more than he could ever imagine. He loved his God, his family, and his country and he has now gone to his reward.

Mr. and Mrs. Gulley, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Bruce. My memories of him may be old, but they are sweet and very vivid. He truly was a great guy and he will be missed by all who knew him. The news was late in getting to me, so I missed the service and just wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Rely on the Mighty One to get you through this terrible time of sorrow and always remember that funny, happy boy that you raised to bless our lives for 51 years. With Love, Sympathy and Prayers, Melinda Rhodes Schurr

We will miss you, but also know you are in place where you will never be in pain or suffer like you have the past several years. This is a very sad time for "our" baby girl, but she will carry you in her heart everyday, as will I. Carissa is saddened by the fact that Cooper will not grow up with you in his life, but she will make sure he knows what a kind, loving, and wonderful man you were. You would have been so proud of "your" boys at your service. They expressed their genuine feelings for you, looked nice, and acted with respect, just how you taught them to be. They are truly your legacy and they too will miss you greatly. Thanks for the 22 years we shared married, and for "our" beautiful daughter. You will be missed!

Words of condolence can never ease the pain at times like these, but know that the sorrow you feel is shared by all who knew him. Bruce was a man who set the standards for his peers, as well as his students, to emulate. I remember one instance when Bruce a special ed student, David Shirley, to state competition and David won. David came back a year later as his own boss making more money than his teachers did. Just one instance of the success that Bruce afforded his students. He will be sorely mossed by all who knew him.
