1923 - 2012
Martia Louise Cox Penix, widow of Roscoe Penix, died Friday, June 8, 2012. Martia Penix, a lifelong resident of the tri-state, was a mother, secretary, poet, author, business owner, nurse, and church worker. She was born at Ensee Farm in Windsor Township Lawrence County, Ohio on July 21, 1923 to Earl Pierce Cox and Mary Lunsford Cox who raised four sons and four daughters. Martia attended schools in southern Ohio and graduated from Decatur High School as salutatorian of the class of 1941. She attended the Wiseman Business School in Huntington and served as secretary to area business executives.
Mrs. Penix served as president of the Chesapeake Junior Progress Club, was vice-president of the Lawrence County Federation of Womens Clubs, was a director of Chesapeake Interclub Council and was active in efforts to secure library services for eastern Lawrence County. She was an officer and member of the Huntington Poetry Guild, a member of the West Virginia Poetry Society, the National Association of State Poetry Societies, and affiliate of the Academy of American Poets. During these years, she also managed to be a Cub Scout den mother for boys on Big Branch Road in Chesapeake. Martia, with her husband, owned and operated Roscoes Restaurant on Big Branch Road north of Chesapeake, Ohio in the early 1970s. In 1975, Martia was honored by the Regional Authors Council for outstanding contributions to the field of communications for her prize-winning poetry and essays and her personal column which appeared in the Lawrence Leader, a weekly news publication. Her poetry and biography appear in current poetry anthologies. After raising three sons, Mrs. Penix completed the Cabell County Career Center LPN program and served on the nursing staff at Cabell Huntington Hospital for ten years before her retirement. Martia was past president of the Huntington chapter of AARP, and former Assistant Manager of Westview Manor, the high-rise where she resided until December 2009 when she moved to Maryland to live with her son, Rick and family. Mrs. Penix was a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church where she previously taught in the primary department and served as publicity chairman. More recently, she was active in the Barnabas Ministry and the Comfort and Encouragement program.
Three sisters and one brother preceded her in death: Dorothy Stewart, Lyndall Rapp, Carolyn South Warren, and Steven Randolph Cox. Martia Penix is also survived by three brothers: Donald Cox of Patriot, Ohio, Phillip Cox of Proctorville, Ohio, and Stewart Cox of Burlington, Ohio. Mrs. Penix is also survived by three sons and their families: Dr. Ross Penix and wife Maureen of Taylors, South Carolina, Randolph J. Penix of Proctorville, Ohio, and Rick Stewart Penix and wife Nicole of Prince Frederick, Maryland. She has seven grandchildren: Rachel Penix Trach and husband Phillip of Dunbar, Wisconsin, Richard Ross Penix and wife Rachel of Odessa, Florida, Nathan Bryan Penix of Chesapeake, Ohio, Ryan Alexander Wheeler of Proctorville, Allison Penix of Proctorville, Trevor Stewart Penix and Sophie Penix of Prince Frederick, Maryland. Funeral services will be held at Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville, Ohio on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. Viewing will be prior to the funeral at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be beside her late husband at Rome Cemetery immediately following the funeral services. I didnt know Mrs Penix that well, but I do know her son, Randy. Ive known him since the 70s. Im so sorry for all the children & grandchildrens loss.
