Walter Strain went to be with his Lord and loved ones on November 17, 2012 at Baptist Hospital after a brief illness.
Walter served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. He received the Victory Medal for his honorable service in the Armed Forces. Walter was a member of the American Legion.
After the War, Walter began contracting as a Field Supervisor, building Service Stations. A native of Grapevine, Texas, his work brought him to Southeast Texas. He made his home in Lumberton and has resided there with his family for the past 45 years.
Walter loved training horses as well as teaching others to enjoy the sport. For many years he was a member of the Tri-County Trail Blazers where he served as "trail boss" for the Dogwood Festival and Houston Fat Stock Show trail rides. He was also an avid hunter and guide as a member of the Salt Branch Hunting Club in Doss, Texas for over 50 years. During his later years Walter explored his artistic talent, creating hundreds of clay sculptures, of which over 75 percent were donated to various organizations for display or for fund raising auctions for those in need.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Ware and daughter, Juanita Ware Shellnut. Survivors include his wife and best friend of 45 years, Nira Strain, brother, Billy Strain of Arizona, sister, Belle Menefee and husband Ray of Granbury, Texas; a son, Kelly Howell and wife Susan of Mesquite, Texas; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is survived by many that will miss his quick wit, laughter, guidance and above all his friendship.
