Herman Franklin Slaughter, 88, of Proctorville, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at his home with his family by his side after a long illness. Born on February 17, 1924, in Clarksburg, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Lloyd S. and Johanna Slaughter.
Raised in Dunbar, WV, Herman was a graduate of Dunbar High School in 1941. During World War II, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and flew more than 30 missions as a bombardier and as a deputy lead of the squadron over Germany and occupied France. He flew as part of the 391st Bomb Squadron, 34th Bombardment Group (H), 8th Air Force. Herman was a recipient of the Air Medal for his distinguished service and was honorably discharged on December 13, 1945, as a 1st Lieutenant.
He graduated from West Virginia University School of Pharmacy in 1950, where he was a member of the WVU Pharmacy Honor Society. Employed by pharmacies in Morgantown and the Kanawha Valley on behalf of Cohen Drugs, Rite Aid and K-Mart, Herman was a past President of the WVU Pharmacy Alumni Association and a lifelong enthusiast of the WVU Mountaineers. Living for 40 years in Cross Lanes, WV, he was more recently a resident of Proctorville, Ohio.
Herman was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church, in Charleston, WV, and an associate member of First United Methodist Church, in Huntington, WV.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nancy W. Slaughter, whom he married on August 23, 1947; one son, Mark F. Slaughter, and wife, Nita K. Slaughter, of New York, NY, and London, UK; one daughter, Marsha S. Anderson, M.D., and husband, Curtis B. Anderson, of Chesapeake, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Alexander C.F. Slaughter, William J.F. Slaughter, Brooke L. Anderson and Whitney Blake Anderson. Herman was survived by two brothers, Lloyd S. Slaughter, and wife, Marilyn Slaughter, and Harry M. Slaughter, and wife, Karleen Slaughter, one sister, Helen A. Basham, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Harold Slaughter and Howard Slaughter.
The family will greet friends and visitors at St. Marks UMC, at 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 8, 2012. A memorial service of resurrection and celebration of life will be held thereafter at 12:00PM, with the Reverend Monty Brown and Reverend Mark Conner.
Always dedicated to the advancement of science and specifically medicine, Herman has donated his body to research and education at the West Virginia University School of Medicine.
