Opal Scaggs CapperOpal Scaggs Capper, 90, of Proctorville, Ohio, undisputed matriarch of the Capper family, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Midland Meadows, Ona, W.Va. She was born on July 4, 1923, daughter of the late Tom and Mary Scaggs. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Donald O. Bud Capper and her son, Eddie A. Capper. Opal was a graduate of Windsor High School class of 1940, where she played basketball on a team that won the girls county basketball tournament and where she met her future husband, Bud. She worked briefly at the Huntington Dress Factory before marrying in 1943 and becoming a homemaker. She was a longtime member and Sunday school teacher at Beulah Baptist Church and at First Baptist Church of Proctorville, where she was a member for 40 years. In her mid 40s she returned to Marshall University for 2 years to take education classes, at which she excelled. She then returned to work at Fairland East Elementary as a teachers aide, working primarily with Nancy Bane. She also tutored many elementary students in reading from her home. She was an avid reader and always encouraged others to read. She believed reading was the key to education and education the key to success. She was most proud that all of her 6 grandchildren graduated from college. Opal was preceded in death by siblings, Arlan Scaggs, Alta Dwight, Geneva Shepherd, John Scaggs and Sarah Etta Hatcher. She is survived by her son, Donald R. Donnie Capper of Proctorville; grandchildren, Sarah Capper and her husband Mohammed Farraj of Ramallah, Palestine, Joshua Jay Capper and his wife Julie of Tuscon, Az., Neil A. Capper of Proctorville, Ann Clark, and her husband Drew of Athalia, Alaine Purdum and her husband Corbin of Proctorville and Christin Capper of Cincinnati; her 4 great grandsons, Noah Capper , Mac Clark, Caiden Capper and Brooks Capper, her daughter in law, Susan Capper-Mannon and a sister Bobbie Capron of Ona. Funeral service will be held at Hall Funeral Home, Proctorville, Ohio 1 p.m. Saturday, August 31, 2013 with Pastor Jeff Black and Rev. Kevin Bloomfield officiating, preceded by visitation at 11am. Burial will follow the service at Perkins Ridge Cemetery, Willow Wood, Ohio. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/hall.

You never had to wonder what Opal was thinking. Loved that about her!! A full life well lived! Have good memories of her!! Never forget the afghan she made us!
