1920 - 2014

Gladys M. Duty Wilkes Crabtree, 93, of Proctorville, Ohio passed away Saturday, January 4, 2014 at home. She was born September 6, 1920 in Ironton, Ohio daughter of the late William Doris and Goldie Vivian Holderby Duty. She primarily was a homemaker but earlier in life she worked in public works to sustain her family, working at the Dress Factory, W T Grant, Co., Pic Way shoes, Chesapeake Hardware and others. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son Michael V. Wilkes; first husband William V. Wilkes; second husband Marcus H. Crabtree; brother James P. Duty; sister Ida Mae Snyder; niece Sandy Vaughn Lewis; and numerous other aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is survived by her son Ron (Melinda) Wilkes; daughter Valerie J. Palmer; and son Steve (Karen) Crabtree; daughters-in-law Sheila Wilkes, Pat Wilkes; sister Ruby J. Vaughn; brother and sisters-in-law P.O. and Flo Wilkes, Helen Duty, Mary E. Anthony; grandchildren Kevin (Jan) Wilkes, Darrin (Tricia) Wilkes, Megan (Chaise) Grimm, Monica (Scott) Adams, Derrick Cumpston, Jodi Rice, James Palmer, Heather (Pat) Workman, Aaron (Liz) Crabtree, Sara (Bob) Crabtree, and Shad (Christel) Holley; great grandchildren Matt, Zack, Jared, and Alec Wilkes, Conner Grimm, Megan (Tyler) Smith, Ryan Smith, Brittnee Adams, Haley Bays, Hayden and Kensley Workman, Brandon and Brianna Rice, Ben, David, Averie, Ruse, Brandon, Brianna, A.J., and Sam Crabtree; great- great grandchildren Abby and Bella Foster, and Noah Rice; nieces Marla, Candace, Kathy, Cassie, Karen, Brenda, Priscilla, Lisa, and Becky; nephews Jerry, Sharrod, Scott, Howard, Doug, and Barry. Mom was a great mother and grandmother to all and a provider for her family. Mom would always tell you the truth no matter what and would always speak her mind. She was direct and straight forward and to the point. Mom was always striving for life beyond this earth and she has finally made it. Mom never stopped praying. Her mind and body racked with Dementia and Alzheimers but she still knew to pray. We know that she would want all of her relatives and friends to strive to come to where she is, so we can all see her one day. Our family would like to express a special thanks to Monica, Carlene Marlana, Megan, and Brittnee for the care given to our Mom over the last several months. Thanks also to St. Marys Home Health and Heartland Hospice. Funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday January 9, 2014 at Hall Funeral Home by Pastor Clyde L. Carter, Minister Paul Holley and Pastor Norman Mills. Entombment will follow in Rome Cemetery Proctorville, Ohio. Visitation will be held from 12 to 1 p.m. Thursday January 9, 2014 at Hall Funeral Home Proctorville, Ohio. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/hall.

We have lost a great woman of God. We love sister Crabtree and have missed her smiling face since she became ill and not able to be at church. She was truly a strong woman and spoke her mind but with love to those who knew and understood her. We know she has made the goal we are all striving to achieve. To be at rest with Jesus in Heaven. May God grant the family peace in her passing and grace to find the God she loved and served.

Deepest sympathy for the loss of your mother. There's nothing like a mothers love and prayers. May God heal your hearts for the great sadness you feel and give you joy knowing you will be with her some day... Gladys was always good and kind to me and I'm very thankful I knew her. May God bless!
