1927 - 2014

Homer Franklin MaysHomer Franklin Mays, 86, of Wilmington, NC formerly of Chesapeake, Ohio passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Azalea Health & Rehabilitation, Wilmington, NC. He was born on March 26, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio, son of Albert Mays and Erma Bibler Mays, grandson of William F. Mays and Mary M. Kirk, grandson of David Earl Bibler and Sadie Bright, great grandson of Daniel Mays and Lucy Ann Forgey, great grandson of Jeremiah Kirk and Ellen Miller, great grandson of Sheppard Bibler and Caroline Gulick, great grandson of Warren Bright and Erma Holiday; brother of the late Mary Ann Violette and Barbara Allen DeFoe (Sonny) of Wheelersburg, Ohio; father of Laura Linda Mays of Huntington, WV, Gregory Alan Mays (Becky) of Wilmington, NC, David Earl Mays (Lori) of Pawleys Island, SC, Kimberly Lynn Mays (Tracy) of Mechanicsville, VA, Christopher Homer Mays (Dru) of Carolina Beach, NC, Melissa Dawn Mays Bergquist (Jon) of Huntington, WV. ; grandfather of Aaron Michael Rowe, Christopher Austin Rowe, Lauren Elizabeth Mays, Landon Gregory Mays, Carson Alan Mays, Allison Olivia Mays, Christina Glen Mays, Zane Wilson Mays, Christopher Blaine Mays and Ian Cooper Bergquist; step-grandfather of Jessica Nicole Bergquist, Jonathan Andrew Bergquist, Tyler Ashton Howard, Christina Allen Howard, and William Andrew Howard. Homer graduated from Galena High School in Galena, Ohio in 1945. He obtained Degree of Flora in the Ohio State Grange. In 1959 Homer met and married Christine Craycraft in Greenup County, Kentucky and went on to father six children. Homer was made a Colonel, an Honorary Aide-De-Camp to the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 2011. He was also member of the following groups: C.P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society, Greenup Old Tractors, Engines and Machinery (GOTEM), Greenup, Kentucky, Kentucky Farm Bureau, Greenup County, Kentucky, KYOWVA Genealogical Society of Huntington, West Virginia, Lawrence County Genealogical Society, Ironton, Ohio, Lawrence County Historical Society, Lifetime member of Marine Expeditions of Toronto, Canada, Lifetime member of The Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society of Hammerfast, Norway, National Railway Historical Society, Teamsters Local 505, Huntington, West Virginia, Two Cylinder Club of Waterloo, Iowa, United Methodist Church of Chesapeake, Ohio, West Virginia Antique Steam and Gas Engine Association, Inc. of Tornado, West Virginia, Past member of American Soybean Association Hudson, Iowa, Past member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 194 Columbus, Ohio, Past member of Future Farmers of America (FFA), and past member of Ohio Seed Improvement Association Columbus, Ohio. Homer loved to travel and often told about an August 30, 1996 journey where he flew to Toronto, Canada to travel with Marine Expeditions of Canada. The purpose of this Marine Expeditions voyage was to trace John Franklins ill-fated expedition to find a route through the Northwest Passage. John Franklin was a British Royal Navy officer who was born in 1786. Franklins last expedition met with disaster and he died on June 11, 1847. Neither his body nor his two ships have ever been found. Homer was intrigued with John Franklins extraordinary life and travels and felt fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of this expedition. Without a doubt, Homers favorite trip began in November 1999. It was another trip with Marine Expeditions and this time he traveled around the world for four months visiting all seven continents as well as Easter Island. He frequently said this trip was one of the high points of his life. Funeral service will be conducted 11am Saturday, March 8th, 2014 at Hall Funeral Home, Proctorville, Ohio by Rev. Bob Withers. Burial will follow in Rome Cemetery, Proctorville, Ohio. The family will receive visitors immediately following the internment at The Proctorville Womens Club located on 7507 State Route 7. To the Mays family, we were sorry to hear of your father's passing. We had some good times with Homer in NC. His gentle soul will be sadly missed. He loved to tell us many of his stories, and we enjoyed listening to all his adventures. May he rest in peace, and continue those adventures in Heaven. God Bless you all.

We are so very sorry for your loss! Times like this is when you really remember every little detail of what a great man Homer was. I never really knew him, but I know what a great man and father he was by listening to the stories. Now those stories will be told again with the ones above! Keeping you all in our prayers! I remember the day he met my sister Christine in Kentucky. HE used to come and court her by sitting on the front porch of our old house in South Shore Kentcky. I was Christine's pesky little sister who wanted to know what was going on. I remember walking with my sister many times while she carried our little sister Kathy, to take Homer and his dad Albert Mays Lunch. Beans and cornbread. I will always remember him fondly.I loved his quiet sense of humor. He never seemed to mind,me tagging along. Rest in Peace. Carolyn CrayCraft Potter

I am so sorry to hear of Homer's death. He was always a gentleman to me. None of you kids will remember me, but I rocked the two oldest of you. My husbands, Dwight "Stoney" Stone, and Eddie "Smiley" Sowards, worked with Homer. I was also good friends with Pearl Mathis, Clarence's wife, and knew your mom through Pearl. Please accept my condolences in the loss of your father.
