I can't remember a time where I was fortunate enough to be around John and he wasn't smiling. A part of my second/musical family, John and Jan were thoughtful enough to make it to see my bands play, host parties for our Acacia Jam folks, always quick with a laugh and a story. His gentle manner and pleasant nature are already missed.

Joel, losing a parent is hard. I know. I lost one earlier this year to Multiple Sclerosis and Liver Cirrhosis. I hope you can take comfort knowing that at least your father isn't struggling with illness anymore. Know that you have a lot of 'brothers and sisters in green and gray' if you should need anything. John W. Jakubowski, age 68 of Greenville, passed away quietly Friday, September 5, 2014 after a long difficult journey with Pulmonary Fibrosis caused by Asbestos Lung Disease acquired when serving in the United States Navy. John was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Josephine Jakubowski; brother, Bob Jakubowski; parents-in-law, Mike and Helen VanderWoude; niece, Karen Jakubowski Laway; and nephew, Michael VanderWoude. John felt truly blessed by all the friends he met throughout his time in the US Navy and many years of employment at U Rent It, Sun Rentals, and Unity Security. Besides enjoying his family and friends, he loved to golf. The cross country trip after he retired was an event he talked about often. John is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jan; children, Jill and Chuck Wilder, Julie and Dennis Geer, Joel and Stephanie Jakubowski, and Jeff Jakubowski; grandchildren, Makenzie Kozal-Wilder and Tyler, Andrew, and Kiersten Geer; great-grandson, Alex Geer; sister-in-law, Donna Jakubowski; brother-in-law, Dan and Trenna VanderWoude; and nieces and nephews, Kathy Jakubowski, Karla Moskowitz, Keith Jakubowski, and Theresa and Brent Chalko. The family will receive relatives and friends at Hurst Funeral Home, 1801 W. Washington St. (M-57), Greenville, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM Monday, September 8 and 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM Tuesday, September 9. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 10 at Spencer Mills Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 12710 17 Mile Rd. NE, Gowen, with Rev. Lewis Vander Meer officiating. Military honors will be rendered under the auspices of the Ray Booth American Legion Post 101, Greenville. Private burial will be in West Montcalm Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Wounded Warrior Project or Hospice of Michigan would be appreciated.
