Diwana, when I could not find your number a few weeks ago, I should have just went looking for you up and down the street, door to door until I found you. I just saw this, just now...and what keep hearing is you saying, "Jill, give me a call. Mom would love to see you." You know, that statement meant more than just a visit. We all would have cried, hugged, ate stewed tomatoes with biscuits, made a billion jokes of how we drove her crazy as teenagers [especially when she went bowling with Patty] and now as adults, I could have said, "Betty, I love you. Thank you for being that second mom when I needed it." I learned alot about the importance of trying to keep a family together regardless of hard times. Betty would give her last 5 dollars to feed someone if they were hungry and she could always make a good meal out of nothing in the kitchen. Hehe, I remember when your dad came home in Proctorville at the end of a weekend [Betty, are you mad at me nonstop about what? 1,000 times] and whoa, yep she was fire mad [CHARLES!] but the sausage gravy and biscuits Betty made while squawking at us all were delicious. That's when Tony and Michael told on us [Chuck didn't] and as always, I was sent straight back to Four Pole. "Gail, come and get her now! And don't bring her back." That always lasted less than 48 hours with us all eating nutty butter bars at the kitchen table. Betty's love, in her own unique way, was never conditional. If she cared for someone, then it was real and if she loved someone, they damn sure knew it. If it were not for your mom Diwana, with her treating me back then like I was one of her own kids, I would have been an arrogant mess of a person and that is a huge understatement. I hope to God that Betty knew that after all these years, I loved her. Michael, Tony and to all the family...the sun just got a little less brighter.
