Alvin R. MaxonAlvin Robert Maxon, 74, a dedicated and caring spouse, parent and friend, passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital from a four year, heroic crusade with Metastatic Melanoma Cancer. Al was born January 22, 1940, the son of Luther V. and Constance Joy (Main) Maxon. Al, along with his three brothers and one sister, was born and raised on the Maxon farm in Broomfield Township, Isabella County. He graduated from Weidman High School in 1958. Al served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960 as a cannoneer. He was stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina and did his basic training in Kentucky. Al was a master plumber and a member of the Local Union 174 of Coopersville, Muskegon and Grand Rapids. He was recently recognized and awarded for 40 years of service. He enjoyed many interests in life such as woodworking, antique cars, old Ferguson and New Holland tractors, brush hogging, plowing, finish work, engine and mechanical repair. Al was an excellent craftsman and built two homes during his lifetime as well as cedar chests, wine racks, media center storage cases, cupboards, mirror frames, shelves, clocks, sewing cabinets, and magazine storage racks. Al is survived by his partner, Gayla Harms; his children, Amy (Dave) Harris, Kristine Maxon Swindell, and Kirk Maxon (Liana) McCartey, all of Greenville; grandchildren, Conner and Caden Swindell and Cameron Tucker; brothers, Darwin (Miko) Maxon, Delton (Ruth) Maxon, and Larry (Elaine) Maxon; and sister, Betty (Jerry) Cook. He was preceded in death by his dad, Luther in 1946 and his mother, Joy in 2007. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville, with Pastor Andy Croel of Pilgrim United Methodist Church, St. Johns officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Private burial will be in Broomfield Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation.

My deepest sympathies to the extended Maxon family who loved this man so dearly. I am so sorry for your loss. He was an honorable man and loved you all so much. I will be out of town and unable to attend the visitation or funeral, but my heart will here with you. Praying especially for my friend, Kristine.
