Alvin S. WaldorfAlvin Sylvester Waldorf, age 94 of Greenville, died Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Spectrum Health United Memorial Hospital. He was born December 23, 1919 in Dearborn, the son of August and Theresa (Wolschon) Waldorf. On February 3, 1940, he married Maude Arlene Calkins. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, having served during World War II. He retired from Federal Mogul after many years of service. Al enjoyed hunting, fishing, and music, and performed country music in many venues in both Michigan and Florida. He was a skilled craftsman who built several homes over the years. He was a universally well-liked man who had a special love for children, and was adored by his family, particularly his grandchildren. Al is survived by his loving wife of almost 75 years, Maude; children, Richard Waldorf of Greenville, Barbara (Jim) Barber of Lowell, Nancy (Mick) Stearns of Fenwick, and Debbie (Ken) Johnson of Florida; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren; sister, Georgianna Jacques of Arizona; and sister-in-law, Lucille (Nelson) Hoisington of Grattan. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Rich; twin brother, Matthew; and other siblings, Wilfred, Bernadine, Nester, Clarence, Raymond, Hildegaard, Marcel, and Josephine. The Mass of Christian Burial for Al will be offered at 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at St. Charles Catholic Church, Rev. Michael F. Cilibraise presiding. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Hurst Funeral Home. Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery, Fenwick. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Great Lakes Caring Hospice.

Al mailed me a letter once and asked me to come to his jam or I wouldn't know about it. I miss seeing him put his black guitar away by the door where I sit...thank you Al. don, drummer, guitar player....

I heard him play and sing at many a gospel jamboree! He was a true inspiration of faith and talent. A distinctive country gentleman. Hopefully we will play again one day on the other side.
