1931 - 2014

Dorothy M. PreshawPRESHAW- Dorothy Owen Preshaw passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 in Madrid, Iowa. Dorothy Marilyn Owen was born July 24, 1931 in Independence, Kansas, the daughter of Carl Franklin and Theda Maye (Hayes) Owen. She was a 1949 graduate of Field Kindley Memorial High School in Coffeyville, Kansas, and a 1953 graduate of the Conservatory of Music in Kansas City, Missouri. She also attended DeAnza College in Cupertino, California and Southern Methodist University, and received an Associate in Music degree from the United Methodist Church. She had been employed as a singer with Starlight Theater in Kansas City; Librarian at N.A.S. Barbers Point, Hawaii; Director of Childrens Choirs in California for several years; and church organist/choir director for ten years at the Congregational Church in Sheridan. Dorothy had been a member of: Mu-Phi-Epsilon Sorority; Chrositers Guild; Fellowship of United Methodist Musicians; and Therapeutic Touch International (formerly Nurse-Healers & Associates). For many years Dorothy performed as a soprano soloist. At the Chicagoland Music Festival, she was the youngest performer just days after reaching the minimum age of 16. She also was a soloist with the following: Kansas City Philharmonic, Oratorio Society of Honolulu, Concerts by the Sea radio program in Hawaii, DeAnza Chorale with Schola Cantorum in California, and many recitals. On December 28, 1955 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, she married Stanley E. Preshaw of Ithaca, Michigan. He survives, along with their daughter, Rev. Susan Preshaw Sickelka and her husband, Rev. David Preshaw Sickelka of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, First Lieutenant Anthony James Preshaw Sickelka and his wife Kate of Fountain, Colorado and Shannon Rebecca Preshaw Sickelka of Williamsburg, Virginia; and one sister, Gladys Owen Heinz. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Helen Owen Stalmann and Donna Owen; and brothers, Walter Bud Owen, James E. Owen, and Charles Owen. Much of her life was devoted to vocal music, but she was also very talented in many crafts, especially needlework. Dorothy also had the spiritual gift of healing. She would often offer Therapeutic Touch, even to strangers, whenever she sensed that they suffered. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday, November 9, 2014 at the First Congregational Church UCC (113 South Main Street, Sheridan), the Rev. Philip Van Dop officiating. Private interment rites will be at the Ithaca Cemetery, Ithaca, Michigan. Memorial donations may be made to Alma College Advancement Office (614 West Superior Street, Alma, MI 48801), Attn: Choral Program or Therapeutic Touch International (PO Box 130, Delmar, NY 12054). Arrangements were entrusted to Ankeny Funeral Home, Ankeny Iowa and Hurst Funeral Home, Greenville, and messages of condolence may be sent via www.hurstfuneralhome.com.

To Stan and the rest of Dorothy's family, I offer my sincere condolences. Dorothy was an inspiration to many and, I, for one, will carry some fond memories. Dorothy was the first person to help me doscover my healing hands and how, best, to use them. I always wanted her to sing for me and asked her if she would be my voice teacher. The days of vocal music were over, she would say. I attended some seminars and Spiritual study groups off and on over the years and felt a kinship with Dorothy that I will miss. She was a wise sage to me, a spiritual teacher, healer, and friend. Proud to have known her and, forever grateful for her guidance, I know she touches us and stays with us, her loved ones, in spirit. You are free, Dorothy of illness and the constraints of the physical world. Now, fly free with the Angels and know you are, forever, loved.
