Homer Henry Brodeur Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1925 - 2014

Homer Henry BrodeurToday we remember and celebrate the life of our beloved father, grandfather, and friend, Homer Henry Brodeur.

Homer was the eldest son of seven children. He was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, on October 1, 1925. He was always an industrious and hard working person. He was busy as a boy of around 5-6 years of age picking tobacco leaves with his mother in Quebec. He had a newspaper route around 11 years of age and sold apples and delivered fruit in town to help his family.

When he became eligible to join the service, he became a Marine and served in World War II on the island of Iwo Jima where he earned the Bronze Star. He studied at night and took classes to earn his GED. Upon his return, he worked in a munitions factory and a grocery store. He attended college and graduated from Lenoir Rhyne in Hickory, NC. He began working for Crawford Insurance. Because he spoke French, they sent him to Lake Charles, LA where he met Lila Rahbany. He and Lila were married in September 1952 and soon after began their family. Homer took a position with Underwriters Adjusting Company and moved their family to Lumberton, TX. He and Lila became involved in the community. Homer became a member of the Lumberton Chamber of Commerce, a board member of the Lumberton Public Library, and served on the Hardin County Appraisal Board. He also helped to start an investment group for local businessmen and was well-known and respected throughout the community.

Homer is preceded in death by Lila, the love of his life, and a son, Patrick, who died at birth.

He is survived by his sister, Jeanette Lizza of New Braunsfel and his three children, Deborah Gibson of Houston, Mark Brodeur and wife Tracey, of Conroe, and Susan Gilbert and husband David, of Lumberton; and five grandchildren: Leaha, Garrett, Hayden, Nathan and Taylor and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to support the Lumberton Public Library or the Lumberton Women's Civic League towards the Lila Brodeur Scholarship Fund.

Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Friday, December 26, 2014 at Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee with interment following in Hooks Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 10:00 am until time of service.

To Deborah, Susan, & Mark, I miss your Dad. He’s a man’s man and a gentleman’s gentleman. But more than that I miss the opportunity to talk with him. He gave me a good basic rule of life that has been beneficial to me. I pass it on to all others that will hear it. And as a fellow Marine war veteran, I feel we share that intense pride of being a Marine, and serving our country and the world. Cousin Rick Boisselle

I worked under Homer for many years at UAC and knew him as a boss and a friend. He was very knowledgeable in his field and always helpful and understanding. He took great pride in his family and I know you will miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with you on this sad day.

My heart goes out to my cousins and their children. I know how much you all loved Uncle Homer. He was such a sweet, loving and caring person. As a teenager, I was much closer to Aunty Lila and Uncle Homer because of the relationship I had with Deborah. As she and I grew older and started our lives, I'm afraid I did not get the chance to spend as much time with them anymore.I do remember our family re-union and how much fun it was to all be together again. That time will forever be in my heart. My prayers and thoughts go out to all of you. My mother, as weak as she has been over the years, has managed to out live all her siblings. I can't imagine how hard that must be for her. I had to break the news to her about her brother and I felt so bad for her, but I did remind her that now Aunty Lila and Uncle Homer would be re-united. That did seem to be of some solace to her. That being said, again my prayers and thoughts are with you all. Semper Fi HB,and RIP!

My dear cousins, you know how much I loved your dad. He was always my favorite uncle and I enjoyed the bond we had since I was a child. I'm especially grateful that my daughters got to spend part of their summer vacations with him when they were little and that my grandson Mateo had a chance to get to know him while your dad was active enough to drive him around on his tractor! Those special memories will last forever. Thank you all for sharing him with me for all these years. He was truly one-of-a-kind and I'm honored to have been related to him. I'm so sorry that I can't be with you during this time of grief, but know that I will be there in spirit. My deepest condolences to all of you. Rest in peace, sweet uncle. Till we meet again.

I had the honor and pleasure of working with Homer for several years at Underwriter's Adjusting Company. He was always fair and kind and understanding. I remember when I had to turn in my resignation, I cried because I was going to miss having Homer as my boss and I felt like I was letting him down. I was so happy to reconnect with Homer within the last two years as he had been in my thoughts. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I know he loved his family very much, as you loved him. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Good-bye, Mr. Brodeur, you will be missed.
