1940 - 2014

Gary Donald Hesson, The Great Gar, 74, of Chesapeake, Ohio passed away Saturday, December 20, 2014 at his winter home in Sebring, FL. Gary was born September 4, 1940, son of the late Devern and Margaret Hesson. Gary was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Ruby Zimmerman Hesson; son-in-law Randy Finley; and beloved aunt and uncle, Minnie and Rex Junebug Fuller. Gary is survived by his daughters Lori Finley of Chesapeake, Ohio and Shelley Hesson of Hillborough, NJ and Shelleys partner Lenny Grasso of Raritan, NJ; grandsons Justin Finley of Huntington, WV and Trent Finley of Chesapeake, Ohio; and a very special great granddaughter Audrey Grace Finley; brothers Ronnie (Karen) Hesson of Lake Placid, FL and Larry (Judy) Hesson of Humble, TX; sisters-in-law Vera Zimmerman Webb of Chesapeake, Ohio, Nancy (Kevin) Schafer of Marco Island, FL; and brother-in-law John (Brenda) Zimmerman of Chesapeake; and numerous close cousins and their families with whom he enjoyed many hours of music, fish fries and laughter. Gary was a lifelong employee of the Huntington Publishing Company, where he worked as a pressman for the Herald-Dispatch with over 45 years of loyal service. Gary and Ruby used to enjoy trips to Cincinnati to watch The Big Red Machine play, as well as attending Thundering Herd Basketball teams of old at the infamous Veterans Memorial Field House in Huntington, WV. Gary enjoyed playing and watching many sports. He was an avid bowler, golfer, basketball and softball player. He had a competitive spirit and a huge heart. The family would like to recognize friends from Garys Highlands Mobile Village family in Sebring, FL, with special thanks which can never be repaid to Richard Dick Mailhot for his generous giving of time and friendship. Other special thanks to go to the Huntington Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE) Home for allowing him to be part of their family throughout the years. He looked forward to Friday night shuffleboard and dancing where he continued to be and will always be remembered as The Great Gar. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 10, 2014 at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, Ohio. Visitation with family will be held one hour prior to the service. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/hall.
