Flossie (Flo) Bowyer-Koontz, 87, of Huntington, WV, died Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was born July 17, 1927 in Lawrence County, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Iva Jones Chapman, her daughter Mary Jo Miller, and husbands Jack H. Miller (father of her children), Orman L. Bowyer, and Robert (Bob) Koontz. Mrs. Bowyer-Koontz graduated from Huntington East High School and Marshall University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree (magna cum laude), Masters degree, and a two year advanced study toward a doctoral degree. Her career was spent with the Cabell County Board of Education. She was a Title I reading teacher, elementary school principal, implementer of the first public Kindergarten program, director of early childhood education, supervisor of junior high school language arts, and concluded her career as supervisor of elementary school language arts. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, several professional organizations including Kappa Delta Pi and Delta Kappa Gamma, the Huntington Woman’s Club, and served as president of the Pilot Club of Huntington. Mrs. Bowyer-Koontz enjoyed reading, traveling, golf, bowling, bridge, and spending time with family and friends. She had a strong faith in God and believed that family comes first, last, and always. She is survived by her daughter Linda Miller Prater and son-in-law Bruce, grandson Ben Prater (Melissa), granddaughter Emily Prater Knodel (Katy), 4 great grandchildren, Caroline and Cameron Prater, and Sailor and Ashby Knodel, as well as a host of extended family and cherished friends. Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, Ohio is in charge of arrangements. A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice House of Huntington. To the family, We want to express our deepest sympathy to you for your loss. Flo was warm, welcoming and, at the same time, fiercely independent and true. She greeted us as friends from the day we arrived at the Belford and her friendship is truly missed. She is in our prayers always.

Linda and family...so sorry for your loss.. I was her secretary (along with Mrs. Leap and Mr. Wassum) in my first job with the CCBOE. She was always good to me. I saw two or three times after she retired. I will be remembering you in my prayers.
