John Phillip "Coach Phil" Davis Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1946 - 2015

John Phillip John Phillip Davis, Jr., “Coach Phil Davis” 69, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, July 10, 2015 in Lavalette, WV. Phil is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter Gina; sons, Brian and his wife Jody, Scott and his wife Amanda; grandsons, Chase, Andrew and Corey; and brother, Frederick Davis. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Helen Davis. Phil was born on April 1, 1946 in Huntington, WV son of the late John and Helen Davis. He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1964 and then attended Marshall University in Huntington, WV. He married Helen Potter, his college sweetheart in 1969. Phil began his career as a teacher and coach of football, wrestling and track at Buffalo High School, where he taught and coached for 20 years. He then became a teacher and coach of the same three sports at Chesapeake High School until he retired in 2011. Phil’s children remember him as a patient, loving father who encouraged them to pursue their goals. Phil was an accomplished coach who will be missed by generations of players. He was a dedicated man who loved football, wrestling and track but even more so the young men who played for him. He was passionate about the future of his players and students. Phil was also an avid fly-fisherman who loved to teach others to fish as much as he loved fishing tales. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, Ohio with Pastor Mitch Webb officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington, WV. Visitation will be held 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, July 13, 2015 at the funeral home. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Phil’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Attn: Mr. Chris Smith 10181 County Road 1 Chesapeake, Ohio 45619 memo weight room for the improvement of the Chesapeake High School Weight Room. The family would like to thank all of their special friends and neighbors for the kindness they have shown. They would also like to thank caregivers, Dr. Kevin McCann of Marshall Family Physicians, Dr. Jorge Garcia of Cleveland Clinic, Dr. William Thorndyke of Bluegrass Urology, Dr. Mohamad Khasawneh of Edwards Cancer Center, and Shannon Bartram, Tammie Vinson and Shelly Robinson of Cabell Huntington Home Health Services. Coach Davis was the kindest and most gentlemanly of men but commanded the respect of players and staff. He truly loved his job and if the truth was known the players and staff as well. He gave his all to each endeavor and took time for individuals in a caring, loving way. Praise God for fine men such as our beloved "Coach Davis". He has left a void in our hearts that will be hard to fill. May God bless his wonderful family in this most trying time. I am so sorry for the loss and to be out of town working and not able to pay my last respects in person.

Dear Davis Family, I had the honor to teach with Phil at Chesapeake High School. I, also, had the privilege of teaching Spanish to Brian and Scot. Phil was a wonderful example of what a father, teacher, and coach should be. To watch him interact with students and atheletes was amazing. He was calm and kind. I never heard him say anything mean about someone. He was a wonderful person. May God comfort you.

For those of us that had the privilege of playing for this great man, we know what a great loss his passing will have to the sports world of the tri state area. He was a man of great character and instilled that into his athletes. I'm sure he fought the fight with great determination and resilience. He leaves behind his legacy that is transparent through the successful careers and lives of his children and many athletes. May God bless the Davis family for letting me and many others experience the pleasure of playing and coaching with this great husband, dad, and ole ball coach. RIP Coach!!

I met Phil at John and Priscilla's home in Sunset Beach, NC. He was a great man in many respects. As a former coach in Ohio, I greatly admired his many accomplishments as a teacher, coach, and being a father to many hundreds of kids that he mentored through school & life. The Lord will take good care of Phil. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. God Bless. Carol and Bud Myers

I was proud and blessed to have been a student and player of Coach Davis. Always felt that he was more concerned about what kind of men we turned out to be instead of wins and losses. Enjoyed in re connecting with him when my son wrestled for SVHS. God Bless him and his family. BHS class of 1981.
