1928 - 2016

JAMES ALBERT SWANN, 88, of Chesapeake, passed away Monday, March 28, 2016 at Sanctuary of the Ohio Valley. Funeral Liturgy will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Chesapeake by Father Dean Borgmeyer. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery at a later date. He was born March 13, 1928 in Huntington, WV, a son of the late Howard Everett Swann and Clara Agnes Legg Swann. He enlisted in the Merchant Marines at the age of 14 and into the United States Marine Corp at age 17 serving in WWII. He was a retired Composing Room Supervisor at the Wayne County News in Wayne, WV. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by four sisters, Evelyn Kerns, Pauline Collins, Norma Ellis, Minnie Josephine Gibson and three brothers, Howard E. Swann, Robert (Bobby) Swann and Eugene Tooney Swann. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Joan Ruth McDonough Swann; one son, James Allen Swann of Chesapeake; two daughters, Rebecca Sue Vanover of Chesapeake and Joanelle Swann of Huntington; one brother Orman (Barbara) Swann of Burlington, two sisters-in-law, Gladys Swann and Nancy Swann both of Proctorville; 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the nurses of the Community Hospice of Ashland, Kentucky and of the Veterans’ Administration. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Community Hospice of Ashland.
