1980 - 2016
Kia Rhae Maxey, 36, of Hurricane left this world Wednesday, May 25, 2016. Kia was born February 29, 1980 in Huntington, WV. The daughter of the late Michael Dean Maxey and survived by her mother, Demonsa Pritchard Maxey. In addition to her mother she is survived by her son Austin Finley and her daughter Kenzie Finley; brother, Michael B. Maxey; grandparents, Jennings and Janie Hatfield; grandmother (Nan) Peggy Maxey; special friend, Bob McClary; uncles; aunts; cousins; nieces; and friends. The family will hold a private ceremony and would like to thank everyone for their prayers and condolences. When we gamble we are implying that our life is random, that everything is up to luck and that nothing we do can necessarily create or prevent our outcome. We are not players in a game, or as Shakespeare put it, on a stage. I believe we are each here with a mission and purpose and talents and abilities unlike any other. You see for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So many struggle with the pains of addiction and far too often than not, they gamble and lose. Kia took that gamble and the house collected. They say the main feature of addiction is "loss of control". The disease of addiction causes one to lose all control to "use" involuntarily as a matter of compulsion. That is the only fathomable explanation. Why else would someone risk their life after 4 years of sobriety? Why else would someone gamble so much with no reward? These are questions to never be answered for the one that holds such answers has left this world. Joshua 1:9 ” This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/wallace.

First, allow me to convey my condolences to all the members of Kia's immediate and extended family. I am truly sorry for your loss. I am one of Kia's former teachers. She was in my Sixth Grade Social Studies Class at Ona Middle School. In fact, Michael was in my class as well. It is heartbreaking when I see that a former student has gone on ahead of me. Somehow it doesn't seem right that they precede me when I'm seventy-two. I ran into Kia awhile back, and she did remember me. We talked briefly and then went our separate way. As always, I was pleased to see one of my former students. Please know that all of you were in my thoughts and prayers yesterday and today. And you shall continue to be in my thoughts during the days ahead.
