Russell Lee Irby Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1950 - 2016

Russell Lee IrbyRussell Lee Irby, 65, of Huntington, WV, left this world and entered Heaven on Saturday, July 2, 2016, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House after a long battle with cancer. He was born on November 20, 1950 in Huntington, son of the late Bert Irby and Ruth Frye Irby. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Richard Irby, his stepmother, Thelma Ensley Irby, and a special aunt and uncle who he lived with while he was growing up, Ruth and Walter Clary. Russell attended Cabell County Schools and graduated from Huntington East High School in 1969. Immediately after high school, he joined the United States Navy and fulfilled his dream of becoming a Navy Frogman and SEAL. He completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training (BUD/S Class 57) at Coronado, California in 1970, and served with UDT 12 during the Vietnam War. He was a retired employee of Cabell County Board of Education and a member of River Cities Community Church for over 40 years where he served as a trustee and an usher. He was very talented and skilled in carpentry work and enjoyed building things and working outside in his yard. He was always willing to help anyone in need and did many good deeds behind the scenes that others knew nothing about because he preferred not to take credit or draw attention to himself. He was a hard worker all of his life and a very loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Brenda Evans Irby, whom he married on December 18,1971, two daughters and a son-in-law, Rebecca Brammer and Melissa and Brad Curry, all of Barboursville, a son and daughter-in-law Matthew and Danielle Irby of Huntington, nine precious grandchildren who adored him, Emily McCormick, A.J., Titus, and Jeremiah Irby, Hope, Zac, and Abby Brammer, and Trevor and Tanner Curry, a sister, Sharon Beach of Grovetown, Georgia, several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and aunts. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2016 at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, Ohio by Pastor Larry Greene. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, WV. Visitation will be held 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, Ohio. Memorial donations may be made in Russell’s name to Hospice of Huntington. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/hall.
