Martha Ann Petroelje Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1926 - 2016

Martha Ann Petroelje, 89, died August 3, 2016 after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

Graveside services will be 11:00 am Friday, August 12, 2016 under the direction of Farmer Funeral Home. Visitation and funeral services were held earlier in the week in San Antonio.

Martha was born August 29, 1926 in Silsbee, where she was raised and later graduated from Silsbee High School. Her lively personality drew her to the USO clubs in Beaumont during World War II, where she met the love of her life, Peter Petroelje of Zeeland, MI. He was stationed at DeRidder Army Air Base in nearby Louisiana. Martha interrupted her nurse's training at Scott & White Hospital in Temple to marry Peter in November of 1945. The Southern gal agreed to try life as a Yankee, and the two spent more than 39 happy years in Holland, MI. In 1979, the couple returned to Silsbee to care for her aging parents and remained for the rest of their 59 year marriage. After Peter's death in 2005, Martha became a San Antonian and resident of Morningside Manor.

Martha was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, friend, church member and neighbor. Her open, agreeable personality endeared her to all. She maintained an infectious laugh and ready smile until her death.

A talented quilter and seamstress, Martha had the passion of an artist and the perfectionism of a craftsman. She clothed her family in style, and decorated their homes with her custom draperies, wall hangings and bedspreads. Proceeds from the sale of her quilts benefited her churches. While living in Michigan, she sewed Dutch costumes for the annual celebration of Holland's Tulip Time. She was active in the Holland United Methodist Church, the Silsbee United Methodist Church, Silsbee Women's Club and the Beaumont Quilt Guild.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Chester and Jamie Lincoln and her husband, Peter. Survivors include their only child, Karen Stamm of San Antonio, their only grandchild, Alex Stamm of Austin, nephews Bill Patterson (Leslie) of Greenville, TX and Mark Patterson (Beth) of Arlington Hts., IL, niece Nancy Smith (Adam) of Holland, MI and cousin Warren Johnson (Pat) of Beaumont, TX.
