Rick L. Young, 61, of Ashland, went home to be with his Lord Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, in Jewish Hospital in Louisville with his loving family by his side.
He was born Nov. 12, 1954, in Ashland to the late Owen Morris and Vivian Fletcher Young. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Harold Morris Young; and his mother-in-law, Doris Stewart.
Rick was a member of Wildwood Church of God and was the executive director of the Housing Authority of Ashland. He was passionate about his work and his involvement in serving the community. He was on the board of directors at the Shelter of Hope and has served on numerous boards throughout the city of Ashland. He began working for the Housing Authority of Catlettsburg in 1995 and was awarded 2006 Housing Authority of the Year and he was the High Performer for 12 of 13 years that he worked in Catlettsburg. Rick was named kentucky director of the year during the 2011 KHA/HUD spring conference. He was the first recipient of this award in Kentucky. He also worked to make Scope Towers the High Performance Agency in 2014. He was awarded the Key to the City for both Ashland and Catlettsburg for his devoted service and in 2010, Ashland declared Aug. 5 as Rick Young day.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 41 years, Susie Stewart Young; three beloved daughters, Sara (Shannon) Sorrell, Katie (Scott) Park and Becky (Casey) Davis, all of Ashland; and four granddaughters that were his heart and joy, Lauren, Sydney and Laney Sorrell and Kennedi Park; brothers the Rev. Don (Shirley) Young, Robert (Connie) Young and Dean Young, all of Ashland; sister Diane Young Kersey of Lowmansville; sister-in-law Cora Franklin of Ashland; father-in-Law Roger Stewart of Flatwoods; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
A celebration of Rick's life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland with words of comfort by Pastor Robert Jordan and Pastor Steve Harris.
Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, at the funeral home.
