I think about my High School Principal often, especially that one game of horseshoes we played in the Fall of 1973. It was during the 7th period (Recreation activities). We had a close game. I was pretty proud of myself for doing so well. The bell rang. He turned around and tossed the final horseshoe over his shoulder. RINGER. Game over. He won. All he said was "Well, gotta' get back in there (the school)." I'm glad we weren't playing for money! Davey Dunfee (I knew him as "Dave" and "Mister") had the knack for making everyone smile. He had polio as a child and walked with a limp. But, it never slowed him down. I think his life was a teaching point for us all. His story was of real courage. He showed how to never give up on yourself and to help others see their own potential. I never witnessed a cross word from him towards anybody. He genuinely liked people. On our Senior Class Trip I was in a room with a speaker phone. First time I had ever seen such a thing. Superintendent Fred Hayes, Counselor Wayne White and a few others were with us. Mr. Hayes dialed a number and Mr. Dunfee answered. They talked briefly about how things were going in Florida and back at the school. Then Mr. Hayes asked, "I've got Mr. Hollingsworth here. Want to say a few words?" We had a nice short chat. All the leaders and teachers at Symmes Valley had a way of getting the best out of their students and to make them feel important. I think Principal Dave Dunfee did this best of all. My sincere condolences to all of Mr. Dunfee's family and friends. -- Jim Hollingsworth --
