I have not seen Joan in over a quarter of a century but I remember her as an exceptionally intelligent and articulate colleague. She had a very impressive vocabulary. I cannot remember if she received a Fulbright to study the work of Czeslaw Milosz but I recall that she was an enthusiastic researcher of his writing nonetheless. She was a person with a lot of class and the family has my condolences.

I was an English major at Marshall University in the early 1980s. Dr. Adkins taught me to love Shakespeare by bringing his stories to glorious life in her own unique way. She left a lasting and profound legacy at Marshall and she was genuinely fun and gregarious. She will be greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to learn with her. God Bless!
