Loraine Hardy Copeland Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1925 - 2016

Loraine Hardy CopelandLoraine Hardy Copeland, 90, passed away peacefully in Nacogdoches on October 3, 2016, surrounded by her family.

Loraine was born on November 19, 1925, to Grady and Bessie Rector in Woden, Texas. She graduated from Woden High School as the 1942 Salutatorian.

During World War II, Loraine worked for Sun Oil Company and was passionate about supporting and writing letters to the local servicemen. After the war, she married Marine Corporal Fred R. Hardy who fought in the South Pacific. They raised their two sons in Silsbee.

Loraine was athletically inclined, excelling in golf, tennis and swimming. It was in Silsbee that she took up golf, had a seven handicap, and competed in many high level tournaments.

She also became a Bronze Life Master bridge player, often partnering with her twin sister, Polly, in ACBL tournaments. In any competition, Loraine played to win!

Loraine especially loved to read romance novels and mysteries and worked the crossword puzzle daily. She spent many years entertaining at her Crystal Beach cabin.

She had a quick wit, a strong opinionated personality, a spirited attitude and a giving heart. She was very generous to her family. She was a member of UMWC in Nacogdoches and First United Methodist Church in Silsbee.

Loraine is preceded in death by husbands Fred R Hardy and Dr. Sam Copeland and her treasured grandson, Freddy.

She is survived by son Fred R. Hardy, Jr. of Sugarland and his daughter Jane Ann Anzalone and husband Joseph of Youngerville, La and their children Hardy, Landry and Guidry; son William Forrest (Bill) Hardy and wife Pat of Crystal Beach and his children Will Hardy and wife Stacey of Houston, and Amy Hardy Siegert of Tomball and her children Madalyn, Dawson and Olivia; as well as twin sister, Polly Crisp of Nacogdoches, and loving nieces of Tyler and many more grand nephews.

There was no one like Loraine. May God welcome her with loving arms!

The family will gather for a celebration of Loraine's life.

When I read of Loraine's death, a flood of memories came back to me. Our friendship goes back many years - we used to play golf together. I would struggle along with my double boogy game while she would par the course. She was a beautiful golfer - her swing seemed so effortless and she had a little putter that looked like it came from the dime store that never missed. After we got too old for golf, we played duplicate bridge together as partners and team mates. If my memory serves me correctly, Hugh and I went to Tyler to play on a team with Loraine and Polly to help Polly complete her requirements for Life Master. Loraine was on my team when we went to Fort Worth and I got my Lif eMaster. I missed Loraine a lot after she moved from Silsbee and I'm sorry I didn't get to tell her good bye.

Just wanted to say how much Lorraine meant to my mom and our family. Lord knows she wouldn't miss a chance to put me in my place when I needed it! I have so many good memories of the farm, Bill, Fred, Crystal, Jeannie and Carma, Clinton and Polly. I know mom, dad, Lorraine and the gang have a hell of a bridge game going on! I hope I can come celebrate her life but if not your in my prayers. Deedee
