Mayme Frances Ballengee, 98, of Huntington, WV, passed away on January 15, 2018 at Woodlands Retirement Community with her daughter and son at her side.
Born on December 15, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Hazel Alice Messer Allen and Roy Lee Allen and was a lifelong Huntington resident. She was also preceded in death by her brother, William D. Allen and his wife Ann of Huntington. Mayme and her late husband John R. Ballengee, had been residents at the Woodlands since its inception. Mayme loved her family and served as a homemaker throughout her sixty-seven year marriage. Nearly every picture of Mayme also contained a child, grandchild, or great grandchild. She also served the community and was a 30+ year volunteer with the Cabell Huntington Hospital Auxiliary. She loved helping patient families and her fellow volunteers. She was also close to a number of friends like Sally O. Cyrus who visited her regularly and shortly before her death. Mayme is survived by her daughter Peggy Thurston and husband Jim of Vienna, Virginia, her son John M. Ballengee and wife Victoria of Scott Depot, WV, grandchildren Thom McCay of Danville, CA, Staci Powell of Harrisburg, NC, Amanda Fox of Charleston, WV, and Travis Ballengee of Scott Depot, WV. Mayme also has seven great-grandsons and six great-granddaughters. A memorial service honoring Mayme’s life will be held in the chapel of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Huntington at 1:00 PM on Friday, January 19. Visitation with the family will take place in the church parlor beginning at 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers, Mayme and her family ask that contributions be made to the Cabell-Wayne Association of the Blind in Huntington, WV.
