Etta Marie Swinney, 92, of Ashland, passed away Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, in Rappahannock General Hospital in Kilmarnock, Va.

She was born Sept. 6, 1925, in Elkhorn City, a daughter of the late Frank H. and Myrtle C. Davis Smith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Burns Swinney in 1997; a daughter, Sharon Gillette in 2003; a granddaughter, Lauren Bonn in 2014; two brothers, Joe Smith and Jack Smith; and two sisters, Sara Ward and Nell Sutherland.

Etta was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church. She graduated from Morehead State University and retired from Summit Elementary after teaching first and fifth grades for many years. She was a member of E.K.E.A., Boyd County Education Association and American Education System.

She is survived by a son, Michael (Donna) Swinney of Kilmarnock, Va.; a daughter, Jill (Kevin) Bonn of Orlando, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jon Gillette, Dee Gillette, Erica Bonn and Andrea Swinney; three great-grandchildren, Michael Douglas Swinney, Hannah Gillette and Amanda Singleton; and one great-great-grandchild, Emma Singleton.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, at Steen Funeral Home 13th Street Chapel with Tom Stephens officiating. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Etta's memory may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 370 Center Pointe Circle 1154, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714 or JDRF.org Central Florida Chapter or Rose Hill Baptist Church, 1001 Winslow Road, Ashland, KY 41102.
