Susan Louise Altizer Call Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1946 - 2018

Susan Louise Altizer CallSusan Louise Altizer Call unexpectedly departed this life Friday, March 9th, leaving behind a heartbroken family. She was preceded in death by her beloved father Earl Altizer. She leaves behind her loving husband of 52 years, John Call of Barboursville; her daughters Johnna (Willie) Adkins of Wayne, Karen (Jim) Butcher of Madison, and Leigh Anne (Tom) Roten of Barboursville; her mother Eloise Baumgardner of Barboursville; ten grandchildren Evan, Jonathan, Ryan, and Jenna Butcher of Madison, Braden, Joshua, Samuel, and Sutton Roten of Barboursville, and Camron and Kaitlyn Pullin of Flatwoods KY; and “adopted children” Lora Beth and Jeremy Pullin of Flatwoods KY. A 1964 graduate of Barboursville High, she was proudly a stay-at-home mother for many years before working for Drs. Sadler, Saxe, and Harris when her kids got older. She was a long-standing member of Steele Memorial United Methodist Church, where she loved to sing in the choir and lead women’s Bible studies. She enjoyed hearing her daughters sing together in church as well as hosting big family gatherings at her home. Most important in her life was her faith in Jesus Christ, with whom she now lives triumphant. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Steele Memorial United Methodist Church’s Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 346, Barboursville, WV 25504. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at Steele Memorial United Methodist Church, Barboursville, by Rev. Kevin Lantz and Rev. Jim Butcher. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. My sympathy to your family in the passing of Susan. We attended school together from 4th grade through graduation and I always found her to be a kind and caring friend with a unique laugh and beautiful smile. We'll miss her at our BHS reunions. Prayers of comfort as you deal with this loss.

Heaven has truly gained an angel. Susan welcomed me in her home many years ago when Karen and I became friends. A beautiful person inside and out. Prayers for you all during this heartbreaking time. Love to all. Peggy

To John and Family our hearts were broken when we heard the news. She was a beautiful person inside and out. She deeply loved her family and friends. I know she is with the Lord, Mom and Dad. Especially with Earl. She’ll be deeply missed God Bless.

Even when we were small children together, Susan was an "old soul" who never seemed to doubt her place in the world. Later, while I wondered from place to place, career to career, and even once from husband to husband, Susan remained steadfastly on course, devoting herself to her family, her friends, her church, and her community. Only she could have filled the shoes of our beloved grandmother as matriarch of our family - and she did it seamlessly, with love and grace. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Saddened to hear of Susan's passing, and my heart goes our to Eloise, John, and all of the family. I met Susan in late 1958 when my family moved to Barboursville and my brother and I began attending Steele Memorial. Susan's parents, Earl and Eloise, were our MYF counselors and hosted many get-togethers at their home. They took me and my good friend, Danny Swanson, under their wing and became semi-surrogate parents for the rest of our high school years. I had many a delicious meal at the Altizer home and Earl used to love to take me and Danny fishing up to Lake Forked Run and give us a fishing lesson. He and Eloise would also find little projects for us to do around their yard just so they could send a little money our way. If Susan ever resented her parents' attention to us, she never showed it, and knowing her as the kind and generous soul she was, I believe she whole-heartedly approved of it. Susan was the embodiment of the phrase "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree". She will certainly be missed, but she leaves a great legacy. We are all better people for having known her.
