William “Bill” Smith, 82, of South Point, Ohio passed away at Community Hospice Care Center of Ashland, Ky on Thursday, December 13, 2018. He was born in Huntington, WV on June 12, 1936, a son of the late Carl Hobart and Nellie Stapleton Smith. He was preceded in death by an infant brother Sammy; sisters Gloria Mae McClanahan and Lillian June McClanahan; two brothers Carl Hobart Smith, Jr and Dan Vernon Smith; an infant daughter and son, Stephanie and Gregory Smith; and a son-in-law, Chris Ayers. He is survived by his best friend and beloved wife of 47 years, Connie Sue Smith; five children, Doug Smith (Hope), Lisa Ayers, Christine Grovenger (Eric), Erika Blackburn (Ernest) and Amy Van Steenberg (Mike); 14 grandchildren, Janina Peachey (Andy), Corey Webb (Mike), John Smith (April), Phil Smith (Megan), Eric Grovenger (Bionca), Kimberly Grovenger, Deidra Blackburn, Shayla Blackburn, Jacob Blackburn (Sidney), Mandy Blackburn, Joshua Smith, Ethan Van Steenberg, Evan Van Steenberg, and Daniel Van Steenberg; nine great grandchildren, Tristan, Stephen, Corrina, Bella, Noelle, Vivian, Lillyaunna, Greyson and Willa; two brothers Jim and Pete Smith; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of Huntington High School, Marshall (BA) the Methodist Theological School in Ohio (M Div.) Arizona State, and University of South Florida (MA in Geriatrics) in a long and varied career he was a Methodist Pastor, a businessman with varied interests, a Geriatric Habitability Counselor. He was a charter member and Pastoral Council member of Tri State Worship Center, and a special friend and mentor to the Pastor, Terry Wagner. He was a generous and caring friend, and will be missed by many who knew and loved him. His body will be cremated, and the family and closest friends will join for a remembrance service at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, expressions of love may be made by donation to Community Hospice Care Center of Ashland, to whom the family expresses their great appreciation for their compassion, caring and professionalism in caring for Bill in his final days.
