Claud H. ThornburgCLAUD H. THORNBURG, 84, of Ona, W.Va., passed away Monday, June 16, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church by the Rev. Sue Jarrett. There will be a private burial. He was born November 15, 1918, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late Howard B. Thornburg and Ersie D. Heffner Thornburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Alice Thornburg; a sister, Sarah Thornburg Fraley; and a son-in-law, Ronald E. Bell. Mr. Thornburg was a retired farmer and local businessman. He was also a member and past president of the Barboursville Lions Club; a member of Huntington BPOE #313; active in Lehigh Acres, Fla., United Methodist Church; Fellowship Bible Class at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church; past president and longtime member of the Cabell County Board of Education; past president of the West Virginia Board of Education Association; member of the Barboursville Sportsman Club; and was developer of Guyan Estates, the first large housing subdivision in West Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Marlene Adkins Thornburg; his children and their spouses, Thomas Lee and Rose Thornburg of Barboursville, James Dale and Ann Thornburg of Barboursville, Connie Sue Bell and Gary McLaughlin of Charleston, W.Va., Rosalee and Jim Hodges of Huntington and Sue Ann and Bob McNamara of Fairfax, Va.; grandchildren, Susan and Steve Vance of Ashland, Ky., John and Kerri Thornburg of Ashland, Ky., Kelli Bell of Barboursville, Catherine Thornburg of Florence, Ky., USMC 1st Lt. James D. Jr. and Robyn Thornburg of Hampstead, N.C., Eric and Eileen Hodges of Huntington, W.Va., Nick Hodges of Portland, Ore., Brian, Todd and Jennifer McNamara of Fairfax, Va., and Ken and Dawn Nance of Barboursville; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Addison Vance, Alaina, Mary Alice and Christopher Thornburg, Jacob and Elizabeth Nance, Emily, Amber, Cassie and Caleb White, Sebastian Hodge, and Vivian and Isaac Hodges; and a nephew, Howard Fraley and his wife Marian of Warner Robbins, Ga. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Henson Mortuary, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Dear Everyone, I will truly miss everone over there during this hard time. I am comforted by the fact that my grandfather had so many friends and family with him during his passing.
