Elizabeth W. AstELIZABETH WATKEYS AST, 99, of Barboursville passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2003, at Henson Mortuary by the Rev. Donald K. Vinson. Burial will follow in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. She was born June 29, 1904, in Marting, W.Va., a daughter of the late George J. Watkeys and Minnie Halsch Watkeys. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hamilton Patten Ast; one brother, Charles G. Watkeys Sr.; and one sister, Grace Watkeys Parke. Mrs. Ast was retired executive secretary of Island Creek Coal Company. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church; a charter member of the Woman’s Club of West Virginia; a member of the Beverly Hills Woman’s Club and Past President of the Woman’s Club of Holden, W.Va.; and served as Past President of the Cabell Huntington Hospital Auxiliary where she served for 25 years. She was also an avid Bridge player. Mrs. Ast is survived by nieces and nephews, Don and Carolyn Baylous of Barboursville, Judith and Roger Fortner of Huntersville, N.C., and Charles and Tammy Watkeys of Huntington; great-nieces and nephews, Chip and Teena Watkeys of Greenville, N.C., Joy and Homer Ransdell of Barboursville; Dr. J.D. and Denise Baylous of Virginia Beach, Va., Shay and Rob Heckard of Cobourg, Ontario, Canada, Mike and Mary Fortner of Hampton Beach, Va., and David and Michele Watkeys of St. Albans, W.Va. Friends may call from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, August 28, 2003, at Henson Mortuary, Barboursville. Condolences may be expressed at http://www.timeformemory.com/henson.

You don't know me, but I visited Elizabeth a couple of times to celebrate Holy Eucharist with her. I remember having a nice conversaion with her when we first met; unfortunately, I didn't have much chance to get to know her better. My heartfelt condolences for your loss, and prayers to you in this time of loss. May the ever present love of Christ surround you and give you peace. -Ed Dorsey
