Dear family,
Our hearts were saddened when we received word that your loved one, our Comrade from Barboursville Post 177 had been called from our midst and gone to report to the Commander of all.
We honor the memory of your one who offered his life for the service of this country and who is now enrolled in that Great Spirit army. Their footfalls cause no sound, but in the memory of mankind, their souls go marching on, sustained by the pride of service in time of war. Because of ones like him, our lives are free; because of them our nation lives; because of them the world is blessed. Our Heavenly Father has transferred our Comrade to the jurisdiction of the Post Everlasting of The American Legion. May the soul rest in peace.
Our prayer would be: Eternal God, Supreme Commander of us all, we bow before you with reverent hearts, knowing you lead us on in death as you have in life. You have ordered another Legionnaire to that Eternal Peace, beyond the twilight and the evening star, where beauty and valor and goodness dwell forever. You have sealed his lips. Hear now the sorrow of those who mourn. Touch our hearts with healing. Protect us with your holy care. Help us keep clean and bright, in memory, the splendid flame that now has flickered out, and shelter us with your compassion.
Comfort and heal our broken hearts. In our sorrow may there be no bitterness, no doubt of your eternal goodness. Give us to know the hope of life eternal; that having created and cared for us you will not desert us, that you hold us with an unfailing love; that our dead are in your keeping; and that you are able to do more for them than we could ever ask or think. A thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday. The grass withers, the flower fades, but your word endures forever. And therein is our help and hope.
We realize how futile mere words are to express our deep and abiding sympathy in your loss. May you feel our comrade is at rest, and in endless peace. Generation after generation, the peoples of this world have lived as we live, perplexed and mystified by death. They have gone into the Great Beyond with hearts filled with wistful longing, as all must go. In our memory our comrade’s souls go marching on. Proudly we remember their service.
Surely there is an afterlife for all who have been loyal and true, a life to which peace shall come, where the burden shall be lifted and the heartache shall cease, where love and hope shall be given to us, to be ours forever.
We will fly our Post flags at half-staff all day Saturday as part of the memorial service for our departed comrade. If we can be of assistance in these difficult times please advise any Post officer at (304) 733 0177.

Uncle Bob is a respected veteran, a learned man and a submissive child of God, his Father. He sought knowledge,to master and innovate technology and to learn from history. He was modest in his accomplishments and owned up to his shortcommings. Who can do better?
