1938 - 2007
Larry Lee Townsend, 68, of Milton, West Virginia, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, January 6, 2007, at home surrounded by his family’s loving support and trust in the Lord-Romans 8:28. His visitation will be Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and after 12:00 Noon Wednesday at the church. Pastor Bill Davis and Pastor Troy Nicely will be in charge of a celebration of Larry’s life with Jim Whittington singing, Katie Lee Joel poetry reading and Jim Spurlock sharing some memorable times spent with Larry. The service will be held at 1:00 P.M. at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Newman’s Chapel, Wednesday, January 10, 2007. Pallbearers will be Ed Black, Ron Maynard, Larry Hensley, C.J. Nicely, Larry Bowen, Web McCallister, Houston Roberts and Tom Robison. Larry was born January 17, 1938 to the late Reece and Mamie Townsend. He was also preceded in death by his sister and her husband, Jeanne and William Earles and brother-in-law, Fred Harshbarger. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia “Pat” Rutherford Townsend, three sons and wives, Gregory Townsend and companion Jayne McNeill of Hurricane, WV, Greg’s sons, Travis and Adam Townsend of Milton, WV; Timothy and Jamie Townsend of Milton, WV, Tim’s daughter, Jordan of Pensacola, Florida, his step-daughters Tabatha Hall and Danelle Hall; Todd and Jennifer Townsend and daughters, Lee Ann and Mary Beth of Gallipolis, OH; and one daughter and spouse, Amy A. and Marc Baquerizo of Lake Forest, CA, step children, Bree and Nick Baquerizo. Larry, through modern technology, experienced the joy of seeing Amy and Marc’s precious child that is due in July 2007. He is also survived by one brother, Reece Townsend of Indianapolis, IN, and his sons Jeff and wife Teresa of Sacramento, CA, and Steve of Indianapolis, IN, and dear friends, Sam and Juanita Townsend Webb of Milton, WV, his sisters-in-law, Dora Harshbarger of Milton, WV, Delores and spouse Frank Rutherford of Huntington, WV, brother-in-law, Ronald and spouse Esta Rutherford of Milton, WV, and many nieces and nephews. Larry was an Auditor for C&O Railroad where he was employed for 15 years. When he was offered a promotion he decided to decline the position to keep his family in Milton, WV. He knew Milton would be a wonderful place to raise his family. He was a salesman for several trucking firms in the Tri-State area for over 28 years and retired from Tri-State Express. Larry was a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church and a wonderful example of Christ’s love and strength to his family and especially in these last months. He served on the Council of Milton for 4 years as a councilman, 2 years as Town Recorder, and the Mayor of Milton, WV, for 2 years. Larry always wanted to be a part of his community and he wanted to make Milton a growing community for the younger generations. He was a Mason and affiliated with the Milton Lodge, and a Kentucky Colonel. He served as Vice President on the Board of Directors at the Holiday Towers Condos Association, Myrtle Beach, SC. Larry loved life and we enjoyed being a part of many groups of people; our home church family, our small couples’s bible study group that we enjoyed each month, our camping friends from the Rivers Edge Park, Ashton, WV, and the many friends that we met in Myrtle Beach. We feel so blessed to have enjoyed so many long friendships and we thank you all and praise the Lord for the many cards, visits and calls that so encouraged us through this very difficult time of our life. We would have had the privilege of celebrating our 50th Anniversary, August 23, 2007. Larry was blessed with a wonderful life; it was just too short for the family that loves him so dearly. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Antioch Baptist Church Building Fund, Box 64 Little Fudge Creek Road, Ona, WV 25545. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/wallace

Dear Pat and family,
I know you probably won't remember me, but Bob and I met you through Delores and Frank a few years ago. We were so impressed with your beautiful home and hospitality, and I felt I needed to send my prayers and concerns for you at this hard time in your life. I too lost my spsouse five years ago and know just how hard it is for all of you. I just wanted to share that God's love will sustain you and the family. Don't be afraid to cry and to lean on him. Time takes care of so much, but the good memories as well as the hurt will always be there. I have learned that these get me through the toughest times now. God bless you all.
Pat and Bob

Dear Pat-
Many years have passed since we sat in the same HHS homeroom and Larry and I marched in the band. I enjoyed seeing you both at the 50th HHS Reunion. Neither of you had changed through the years. I will miss running into Larry during my infrequent visits to Huntington. May God grant you peace and healing.

I am so sorry for your loss, and I am sorry that I can't be there to honor Larry with you and those who love him so dearly. Since I was a small child, the name "Larry Townsend" instantly brought smiles and joy in our house. Larry's kindness and humor were infectious, and my sister and I looked forward to any time that we could see him. Our family loved and respected Larry dearly, and we regard him and Pat as part of our family. We will miss him deeply, but we will never forget how wonderful it felt to be in his presence. We love you Larry!

Dear Pat: You may not remember me but I had the pleasure of meeting you and Larry on the Senior Wise trip to Branson last November. While I only knew you a week, I feel blessed in having the privilege of spending that time with you both. Larry was truly a special man and a load of fun to be around. He always wore a smile and was so generous to lend a helping hand to all the "more senior folk" on the trip. A special memory was the experience of sitting with you and enjoying our meal at the restaurant where they throw rolls to you. Larry looked forward to that experience for us all and it was a fun time to share. It was very evident that he cherished you.
May you and your loved ones feel God's special peace and comfort at this time. I will remember Larry fondly.

Hi, Pat, Greg, Tim, Todd and Amy.
I often think of you all and wonder how you are doing. I was saddened to hear of Larry's passing. I remember as a child, how friendly Larry was. He always had a smile that made me feel right at home.
I would like to be with you all, however, the miles across the country does not permit this for me. I will keep you all in my prayers and thoughts. May the Lord keep you all blessed during this time.

Pat & family,
Just wanted you to know that we have been praying for you through the duration of Larry's illness, and will continue to do so. My heart is so saddened, as I so hoped he would beat the odds. However, we know (like the obituary stated), Romans 8:28 is still true, and we are just fortunate to know that God IS working for our good, even though we might not understand down here. Please know that our hearts go out to you at this time, and it was a joy to know Larry and the life that he lived.
