1921 - 2011
Beatrice Bea Smith Shumaker, widow of Charles L. Shumaker, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2011. She was born May 28, 1921, in rural Cabell County, the daughter of the late Ernest M. Smith and Mary Chapman Smith. She was preceded in death by her brothers James Harmon Smith and Clinton Blake, sisters Clara Emogene Jeannie Dick and Caroline Ruth Spence and grandson Charles W. Chuckie Grizzell. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law William Brett Smith (Genevieve); children Mary Carolyn Meador, Charles L. Shumaker II (Rexanna); grandchildren Charles L. Shumaker III (Kari), Elizabeth Shumaker Hensley (Mike), and Mary Jennifer May (Mark); great grandchildren Allen Shumaker, Megan Shumaker, Makayla May, Zachary May, and Annabella Hensley. Bea enjoyed sewing, being with people and travel when she was able. She had a strong work ethic, having retired several times but still working part time up until the second week of December 2010. She loved her family and her God above all else and was a long time and active member and Elder of Highland Presbyterian Church and was famous for her hugs, hats, apple pies and cakes that she cheerfully shared with those around her. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28, 2011, at Highlawn Presbyterian Church, Huntington, by Rev. Rick Wilson. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery, Milton. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Highlawn Presbyterian Church Choir music fund, the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, or the charity of your choice. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/wallace.

Bea was a beautiful lady, both inside and out. Her hugs, cheerful attitude, and contagious smile were her trademark as was her love of hats, and her sense of style and flair. May beautiful memories help you through this difficult time and know that all the family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Mary Carolyn, Charlie and families - I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. The last time I saw her in March she was a spry as always and dressed to the nines. Please accept my sincere sympathies...your mother was one of the "ladies of the church" we all grew up with. Hugs, Wendy

She was a delight. A bright spot in my day, each time I saw her at Drug Emporium. A great inspiration to young people. May God comfort you.

I worked with Bea at Dunhills when I was in college at Marshall. I considered her a dear friend. She often did some sewing for me. I am happy to know that she had such a long and happy life.

Dear Mary Carolyn, Charlie and families,
I was so saddened to hear about "Aunt Bea's" passing. She was always more like a great aunt to me and her wonderful smile will always be with me. I have memories of her visits to Harrisonburg and her tenderness with all of us - with "Baba" and "Dody" and with Annie B and my grandmother. I think the last time we visited was at Annie B's funeral? I can't believe it's been that long -
I wish we were with you but I am hoping we can get a big caravan of VA relatives to make the trek to your neck of the woods this summer. Would love to have a great family gathering and visit and laugh!
My love and prayers are with you and I'll be especially thinking of you these next few days - may you feel God's peaceful presence...
Love,
Marsha Thomas

Bea was a friend of long standing. She worked with my mother, Bertha Ball, and Reba Miller at Local Board #4 in Milton during WWII. I had almost forgotten her when she visited me during a hospitalization in St. Mary's in 2007, picking up my name from a hospital census. In more recent years it was my frequent pleasure to receive hugs as she checked me out at Drug Emporium. God has called a faithful servant home but we will miss her. RJB
