1947 - 2016

Larry W. SticklerLarry W. Stickler, 69, of Barboursville, WV, husband of Cindy Stickler, died Dec. 23 in the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, WV. He is survived by his wife and niece, Diana R. Wilson, of Apple Valley, Minnesota. He will be missed by his beloved church families and Hurricane Civic Chorus members, by many present and former students and by his opera community. Dr. Stickler, a bass-baritone, was a professor of music at Marshall University where he taught voice and music education for 28 years. He served in many roles at Marshall, including as the chair of the faculty senate for 7 years and as the first assistant dean of the College of Fine Arts. He was a member of two search committees for university presidents. He also served as advisor of Collegiate Music Educators, Chapter 2 at Marshall for 10 years. Dr. Stickler taught on the faculties of Indiana University, Drake University, and Yankton College. He earned his Doctor of Music degree with distinction in voice pedagogy, literature and performance; his Master of Music degree in voice and choral music; and his Bachelor of Music Education degree in voice and choral music from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He at one time served as President of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Alumni Association. Voice students of Dr. Stickler have pursued performance careers as well as graduate studies in both master’s and doctoral degree programs. They also can be found as teachers in classrooms and voice studios in colleges and public school classrooms throughout the country. Dr. Stickler served as Dean of the West Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts in 2005-2007 and 1999-2000. Dr. Stickler also taught on the faculty for the West Virginia Honors Academy (GHA) for three years. He served on the faculty of the Indiana University Summer Music Clinics from 1969-1994. Dr. Stickler was President of the West Virginia Music Educators Association. He has served on the executive board of WVMEA as State Advisor for Collegiate Chapters and as President of the University/College Teachers. Dr. Stickler taught voice and vocal pedagogy as well as classes in choral materials and methods, elementary music materials and methods, and curriculum in music education. In addition, he taught student teaching seminars and supervised student teachers. Music Theatre was the topic of his honors seminars. Increasing appreciation for opera in this area became a quest for him. WV Public Broadcasting gave him the opportunity to meet, greet, share discussion with and answer questions for the viewers that come to the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD performances in Huntington/Barboursville. The Herald-Dispatch offered him the opportunity to write background articles of each of the performances. He also hosted pre-concert events for the Marshall University Artist series for opera and musical events. He conducted the Hurricane Civic Chorus for more than 25 years and was the music director at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church in Hurricane, West Virginia. He was the former choir director at St. Marks United Methodist Church in Charleston; Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Huntington; First United Methodist Church in Barboursville and Steele Memorial United Methodist Church in Barboursville. Visitation will be held at Wallace Funeral Home in Barboursville, WV on Friday, December 30 from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church in Hurricane, WV at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 31 with visitation and organ music beginning at 1 p.m. All former choir members, former and present students, or friends of Dr. Stickler’s are invited to attend a choir rehearsal at Forrest Burdette at 1 p.m. on Saturday and to participate in the special service music. Donations may be made in Dr. Stickler’s name to a memorial scholarship to be given yearly to a vocal music student at Marshall University. Memorial contributions can be made to the Marshall University Foundation. A memorial concert will be organized in the future for former students to perform as a “Stickler Studio Singer” as a fundraiser for this scholarship. My deepest sympathies and condolences to Mr. Stickler's family and friends. I was one of his students at the IU Summer Choral Music Clinics in the late 80's. Mr. Stickler was one of the people who set me on the course to attending IU and a career in non-profit fundraising. He was one of my favorite people from those camp weekends. I made life long friends there and we still reminisce about "Larry" and "Myra" (his accompanist at the clinics.) I am saddened to learn of his passing. He was a great man who taught so many by sharing his love of music with us.

Many of us who were at Mishawaka, IN, High back in the mid-1960s can recall Larry's rich, booming voice. We're happy he lived such a full and successful life. Thank you, Larry.

I was one of his voice students. I will never forget the kindness and the laughter he brought to his voice studio. He made everyone feel so at ease during lessons or rehearsals, and had a way of bringing out talents you didn't know you had. His smile will be sorely missed and my prayers go up for Cindy and the family.

I am so heartbroken to hear of the passing of Larry. He was a wonderful man--he cared deeply about his students and his wife. He was quick with a smile and a hearty laugh; he was always careful not to offend, and he thoroughly enjoyed life and those around him. He will be dearly missed.
