Ellen Catherine Grunthaner Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1929 - 2017

Ellen Catherine GrunthanerEllen Catherine Grunthaner, 88, passed away Friday, August 25, 2017, at the Village at Riverview in Barboursville. Ellen was born June 16, 1929 in Buffalo, NY to Margaret Kinsella and George Bury. She graduated from the Buffalo State Teachers' College with a degree in speech therapy, and in 1950 married Robert L. Grunthaner of the US Marine Corps. Son Bobby arrived while the family was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, but the family ultimately returned to Buffalo and soon expanded to include daughters Nancy, Linda, and Marianne. Ellen was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose love and warmth will forever be remembered and missed. She was also a devout member of the Catholic Church, with lifelong friendships formed through her work in the Bishop's Committee Diocese Buffalo and as a parishioner at Sacred Heart in Huntington. In 1979 Ellen and Bob relocated to Huntington, WV where until her retirement in 1995 Ellen managed The Added Touch, a boutique within C. F. Reuschlein's Jewelers specializing in fine housewares and gifts. Throughout their life together, Ellen and Bob returned frequently to North Carolina and the southeast for vacations, with Wilmington and Colonial Williamsburg two favorite destinations that combined their shared love of history and trips to the beach. Ellen was also a voracious reader and accumulated an extraordinary library of Civil War nonfiction. Ellen and Bob moved in 2015 to the Village at Riverview, whose staff is thanked for their dedication and compassion. Ellen is survived by her husband of 67 years, Robert Grunthaner; three daughters, Nancy Wiemers, who with her husband Robert continues to reside in Ellen and Bob’s first home in Buffalo, NY, Linda Adams of Barboursville, WV, and Marianne Grunthaner of Columbus, OH; one son, Robert Grunthaner of Lancaster, NY; three grandchildren, Drew Adams, and Mark and Kerri Affronti; and one great-grandchild, Will Adams. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm Monday, August 28 at the Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 am Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Huntington, Rev. Charles E. McGinnis, Jr. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Buffalo, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Dominican Nuns of the Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary, Buffalo, NY: www.opnuns.org/donate.
