1943 - 2018

George Benny ShyGeorge Benny Shy is face to face with Jesus. George passed on March 21st at St. Mary’s Medical Center due to complications related to his heroic fight with esophageal cancer. He passed peacefully while surrounded by family and friends. George was a “Milton Boy”, a 1961 graduate of Milton High School and a member of the 1961 State Championship Runner-Up basketball team. George was a proud Veteran of the Vietnam War and served in the United States Air Force. George worked for over 30 years in the Strip Mill at INCO Alloys and retired in 1996. A man of many hats, “retired” life provided employment as a substitute Delivery Driver for the Post Office, a part time Forest Memorial associate, and as a representative for a Building Supplies Manufacturer where he really enjoyed traveling. George loved the Lord and his Church, and enjoyed working with youth. George served his community through volunteerism with AWANA, the Hospitality House, as a member and Trustee at River Cities Community Church, and served with numerous Christian organizations. He also loved Sports. He enjoyed a couple of years as a little league football coach, and loved his Mountaineers, Reds, and Thundering Herd Softball. George also was a former commander and long time member of the Milton VFW Post 9796. George was a great neighbor, loved fellowship with his morning McDonalds crew, mowing grass, his time at the library, and smiling, talking and inviting everyone to join him at church. George is survived by his wife of 52 years, Theresa Yoho Shy, his two sons, James and Stephan. Sisters Joyce Mae Porter, Barbara Ann Shy, Martha Gay Plumley and Brother Roland Payne. Nephews and Nieces are Ronald Shy, Julie Moore, Karen and Kris Rogers, Greg Plumley, Ken and Tiffany Strope, Tisha Herne, Christine and Greg Jones, Clint and Jenny Terry, and Brian Downey, along with numerous great nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by parents, Cecil and Izella Shy, his younger sister Betsy Lynn Rienersman, and Nephew Michael DeWeese. George also leaves behind an Amazing church family, and Special Friends Bill, Calvin, Waymond and Whitey who were there whenever needed, and an innumerable amount of people he was blessed to call friends. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2018, at River Cities Community Church, Huntington, by Pastor Larry Greene. Donations in-lieu of flowers can be made to Royal Family Kids Camp C/O River Cities Community Church at https://www.roundchurch.net/pages/donate by placing RFKC in the description on the second page, or any donation to a local Veterans organization. So sorry to hear about George. He was a great man and a role model when I was young. I have so many wonderful memories that I’ll never forget. He was always willing to help others and had a smile while doing it. I hope that I am as great of a father as he was and a mentor to my children’s friends as he was to me. Love ya George!
